I'm very new to the pet search, but my husband and I have been discussing it and we think now that our daughter is a little older, we might be ready for a family pet. I'm really not wanting a kitten, I think we'd like an older shelter cat.

So, I found this really chill older cat that I am intrigued by, he's beautiful! I don't have a picture, but I found one online that looks like him. Any info about this breed?

British Blue?

The smile and coat color reminds me of Russian Blues, which I researched a bit before getting my Bengals. I'm not sure how similar or different they are to British Blues.

They look similar but Russian blues have green eyes

I don't know for sure, I'd say a Chartreux, but, it looks like he could use a cheeseburger.

Thanks for the answers so far! He's just so cute, he looks like a dapper little old man.

If he's at a shelter, the chances that he's actually a Russian or British Blue are pretty slim I think - it's more likely that he's a domestic shorthair who happens to be in a blue color. If he looks like that picture he's gorgeous though!

Yeah, I know Russian Blues are pricey cats, not usually found in shelters. I just love roly poly cats. I've never really been much on the sleek, high strung cats, give me old cats that want to lounge.

Haha well I bet it's a LOT more comfortable. My cats are super energetic and rather destructive, lol.

Hope the adoption works out! Please post pics if you decide to get him!

He's SO wonderful. I can't wait to see pix of the 'real' him. Many head bonks from my kitties and much encouragement from me for your adoption! :wavey:

Looks like a blue British shorthair to me -- and despite being in a shelter, could easily be purebred. The rescue organization we foster for actually had 4 purebred British shorthairs handed over last year, and my in-laws fostered one. They were ex-breeding cats that the unsavory breeder couldn't find homes for, so he just flogged them off on a rescue instead. In the last few months, we've actually had lots of purebred animals come through - Australian shepard, greyhound, Burmese, etc. Sometimes when an animal's not wanted, the registered papers don't make an ounce of difference. :(sad I hope this guy fits comfortably in your home. :))

OH! a burmese? :blackeye: did he find a nice home JG?

We have two burmese at home and they are the loves of our lives (behind the kids of course! :cheeky: ) I just don't understand how people can go to all the trouble of purchasing a pure bred only to drop it off at a shelter when it no longer suits. But, as you said, there are many unsauvory back yard breeders in Perth. :nono:

Nashville, when i was about 15 we adopted a cat from the shelter who looks similar to your picture. We don't know if he was a russian or british blue mix or just a moggie but will still love him. ::) We named him casper because the hair on his legs and feet would glow like a ghost. He was about 6 months old when we got him. An elderly lady had had him but he became too much for her to handle. I don't know why, at the shelter he was so calm and liked to be handled but was very shy as well. About a week after we got him home he was swinging for the cutrains! :cheeky:

Mum has had him for 15 years now and and he is looking very old. I am so glad that we gave him a wonderful life. Pets in my family tend to get spoilt a bit. :)) This picture was taken about 4 years ago when he was still in his prime.

Ultimately that's why I'm going with a shelter cat. I'd probably go with an ethical breeder if I was looking for a *very* specific breed to enter in shows or something like that, but we're just looking for a companion who likes belly rubs and sunny windows. There's no good reason for us not to adopt.

I'm not sure if we're going to be given this cat. They said he might not do well in a home with young children, and I think there's a woman who is also looking at him. I hope something can be worked out. He's so beautiful and SQUISHY! But I understand if a home with a child is not a good fit for him...
