So, still lurking and reading these political threads because it''s always good to learn and absorb.

Reading each of the separate party threads (which sorry, while informative, strikes me as kind of passive aggressive) I have to wonder...how are you on debating the OTHER point of view?

I''ve always liked playing devil''s advocate. Makes you think. I''m not great at it, but it''s a good thing to try once in awhile.

So for fun...here''s a thread on seeing if you can post something POSITIVE about the OTHER candidate (hairdos and ties don''t count

). You''d be doing me a favor where I can learn more - and I think it''d be fun to read.

TGal, I think this is a great idea! In fact, I was playing with the idea of starting a similar thread myself . . . just to see if we can find some kind of common ground somewhere between the McCain supporters and the Obama supporters here on PS. And I promise, I''ll post something positive about McCain/Palin as soon as I can think of something nice to say! LOL!

Great idea Tgal. Let''s see. Obama knows a lot about constitutional law (he was a professor after all), so it''s a good thing that he has an extensive knowledge of the law. There''s my positive thing!

We''ll I''ll start. When the noms were getting settled I actually felt a sense of relief both that Bush''s days in office were outnumbered, and the remaining candidates (Obama, Clinton, McCain) would be an improvement of what we''ve had to endure for the past eight years. Since the campaign has begun my opinion has changed, mostly in part to the very negative (and inaccurate) campaign being run by McCain.

In 2002 (I believe, this is from memory) McCain was the first Republican to sponsor legislation to limit global warming. He was the first Republican senator to break the official party stance on this issue and should be commended for that.

Hee hee! I honestly didn''t mean it that way, but . . .

OK, I thought of something: I have to admit, I was a little bit pleased to see that McCain picked a female running mate. I had been less than impressed with his attitude toward women, and I was pleasantly surprised when he chose Palin. On my better days, I can almost give McCain the benefit of the doubt that he didn''t pick Palin in hope of gaining the votes of the Hillary supporters, but because he actually thought Palin would be the best choice.

Although I may not agree with McCain''s/Palin''s politics, I think it''s great that we have a very historic election here. No matter who wins, we''re going to have a first: either our first non-white President, or our first female VP.

I give him props for campaign finance reform, I know he pissed a lot of people off and that took some...er...stuff

.

I'll play.

Palin appears to be a very strong, energetic, optimistic woman (and governor).

Obama isn''t as annoying as Hillary that''s about all I can think of atm.

Obama wants to put a basketball court in the White House - I love that!

Ha, this is good (and I can see all your teeth pulled out...hahaha).

Strm, hehehe, that really doesn''t count.

I do like Obama''s presence. I know this is "superficial" but boy am I do appreciate an eloquent speaker. Clinton was very charismatic when he spoke. And it may be superficial, but people like to be motivated and excited and proud of a leader. Perception is key and public speaking has a lot to do with that.

I will come up with more later as I learn more and more where they stand on the issues. Can''t wait until the debates!

I too like to be informed enough to discuss the issues on either side. But sadly admit I am not always as up to speed as I should be.

Hey DF, I totally will admit to this too. With popping a kid earlier this year, I feel like I''ve been living under a rock. I know there are plenty of other places to go get politically savvy but I like PS and the folks here and think it''s a pretty smart bunch, which is why I''ve been reading and checking out posted articles here. It''s just hard to weed through some of the heated stuff.

I know I probably won''t glean TOO much from this thread since it''s tough to really go and rave about the opposing candidate, but I thought it would still be fun. And I DO like debating the other side...you really learn a lot that way.

But TG, did you ever take debate in school? One always had to be ready and able to counter the other view, it might be one you supported or it might not. That is why that was so invaluable in terms of teaching you to be fully informed.

Trust me, I have a few brain cells missing now with three kids and I admit I sometimes am just stubborn about taking time to educate myself intensely about something I am not favoring. I like to know the basics in order to make an informed choice and do delve deeper if need be, but honestly, I barely have time for the stuff I HAVE to know!!!

I believe that is it truly admirable and honorable that McCain while a POW inspired so many other American POWs to hang on and keep faith and then stayed to be the last one released. I do believe that he does love his country will all of his being.

I also admire all the charity work that Cindy does for the children of the world. The story of her being in Mother Theresa''s orphanage and MT handing her a little girl and begging Cindy to take and raise her was especially touching. Especially since she did ... without her husband''s knowledge and consent. She is now 15, I believe. Cindy also talked her close friend in adopting a little girl from the orphanage also- which they did.

I didn''t know it either until MSNBC had the RNC video clip of her (I think that is what it was.) It just made me cry as a woman and a mother. Cindy McCain for Prez. Ha ha!

Thanks Irish!

Sometimes, I think Cindy is a better candidate than her hubby. Since she has taken over her father''s company, the company is done extremely well. I think that anyone who can run a successful business can run a country!

The girl that they adopted had to endure many many surgeries to correct a severe cleft palate and lip. She looks great now. I guess that is what being financially sound and having a good healthcare plan can do for you and your family. <--- oops! Did I just type that?! LOL

I used to think this too...until some of our corporate fiascos of recent years!

But I guess your point is SUCCESSFUL business, and I totally agree.

Why not?! I bet it would certainly be cheaper than having the secret service clear out a jogging path and then run with the prez. I remember when Clinton use to run all the time. Great idea to keep in shape or to lose weight but strictly from a financial point of view, a basketball court would be great. Besides, I heard that he is a great basketball player. Why not make deals on the court instead of the golf course?!
