First thing this morning I get an overnight package from a jewelry Chain store 300 miles away. I opened it up and there was a customers 1.25 diamond ring for me to appraise.

This company is one I use to do business with 14 years ago when I did appraisal work only as an independent. I use to do all of their appraisal work across the nation along with others. I gave all of that up when I went into retail (conflict of interest). After calling them they said you were the only one we had on file and didn’t have a phone # so we mailed it hoping you were still in business!

People just because its a big chain store does not mean they have the smartest people working for them. Do some research on who your leaving your ring with. Why would a large chain like this not have an appraiser on hand?

They asked me to ship it back and I asked for their Fedx #

I know this might offend somebody but Im going to say it again. When you go to the malls you may end up dealing with somebody that worked at Orange Julius the week before and now your handing over your diamond and not knowing what they might do to it. Like this!

WOW! If I were the customer who owned that ring I don't think that I would be too happy about that. Luckily, the ring is safe. Why would anyone ship something without the receiver knowing about it, especially if it's a 1.25ct engagement ring? Once again....WOW!

If this is a chain store, they surely have policies about this sort of thing and the employee who sent the package was just unaware of how to handle outside appraisals. This was probably a fireable offence for that worker. Not that this is anything of an excuse for such a boneheaded move but this is not the policy of any store, much less anyone successful enough to become a chain. It seems a little harsh to slam all stores with a mall address for such a foolish mistake.

You are so right! Let me ask you if you don't mind? My son is getting engaged and he and his fiance want a heart shaped diamond. They are on a budget what would you recommend in terms of looking for a quality diamond and setting. We are New Englanders. Would you go to the local Jewelers building? Instead of as you said the malls?
Also I am looking for a ring for myself I am seperated
but workingon things. Wearing my wedding band seems ackward, but I miss having my rings. P.S. When ever we're together with the kids for example he always wears his. What do you guys make of this?

My opinion is that a guy who wears his wedding ring considers himself married.
