Can this opal be polished?

Disclaimer. I have no clue if this is a natural opal. But I bought it bc I fell in love with the setting. It looks like it got whacked or maybe even polished after bc it doesn’t feel sharp or jagged. Wondering if I can save it or just enjoy as is or replace with a similar stone.

I can certainly see why you fell in love with the ring. I had an opal polished, and it was too small for the setting afterwards, so we made a bezel so it would fit. I hear good things about Boyd Fox, and someone here my know a lapidary who specializes in opals. It’s beautiful and I would want to restore it, if it were mine.

Ty. I soo love the prongs tho! Wouldn’t want to have to bezel it.

I don’t know anything about opal but that 3rd shot, lush!
I would enjoy it as is.

Based on photos it appears to be a real opal but, going by the first picture looks like the opal has crazing/hairline cracks so I don’t think it can be saved (the chip is pretty deep as well).

The damage is quite extensive and will require more than a polish. I has to be recut, which will make it too small to fit the current setting.

Ty. I guess that I will appreciate it as is for now. Any idea what type of opal this is? And the cost to replace it with a similar one? Just for the stone.

Love that setting!

It doesn't look to me like the damage could be repaired because it's broken so low on the side. I'd probably have a lab cabochon made so I'd know it would fit into the setting well. Maybe a lab emerald, sapphire or ruby cabochon. Unless you can find another opal that has very similar dimensions.

wow ! i'd wear it and enjoy till it either gets more damage or you cant stop seeing the chip
its such a beautiful setting, and the opal is a stunner , someone must have been heartbroken to have it damaged like that

wear it all summer and autumn and see what happens

This! I figure opals are soft anyway so if it’s already damaged I don’t have to stress when I wear it! Lol
