I am picking some side stones to make a 3 stone ring. I ordered one round and it is 5.57 x 5.6mm.

I found another round, nice stone, size is 5.42 x 5.50mm

Is this mm difference visibly noticeable on a 3 stone? There will be a 2.27 round in the middle. Anyone have any ideas? Will one look smaller?

I''d say it depends on your eyes, and level of "fussiness".

In that the maximum differences are 5.42 (min on second stone) as compared to 5.6 (max measurement of the first stone), this MAY be visible to your eye.

A good setter can probably make the difference between the stones not be obvious, especially if the center diamond is over two carats, but I''d advise you to see all three stones next to each other to make that decision. Might be good to have the person who is going to set them comment too.

I think it would also be wise to know the depth measurement, and girdle measurement of each of the side stones too. Just because the diameter is "close" the appearance of the stones may differ based on the depth, or may not match the appearance of the center stone.

Thanks RockDoc - y''know I didn''t think there would be an easy answer

.

I have matched up the lower half facets (all at 80%) and the general depth and table sizes and crown heights. That part is ok, but I have some trouble finding the diameter I need at a reasonable price that have the 80% and everything else.

I guess I''ll just have to lay everything out together and see if it bothers me. I am pretty god at picking out size differences, so I think I might be able to see this difference.

That is an interesting comment you made, about how the setter can make them look closer in size. I wonder how that works - it''s interesting that the setter can do that.
