Can someone please tell me how to love a rb hearts and arrows ?

It seems I might be inheriting one (about 1 ct.). And, fact is, I just don't feel hearts & arrows, never have. They seem "dated" to me (apologies), esp. since larger facets have been so popular. I've tried a bit to appreciate rb h&a but not lots of success on that so far. I'm a large facet/omc/oec/lower colored diamond type person.

No, I don't want to sell this stone for sentimental reasons.

So, tell me why you love your rb h&a, if you would. Sometimes, someone here says something in discussion that just clicks - I guess that is what I'm looking for.

thanks

Buy another one and make a pair of earrings, you won't even see it and everyone else will love them.

Re: Can someone please tell me how to love a rb hearts & arr

put it in a pendent, same concept, you wont see it, others will.

Re: Can someone please tell me how to love a rb hearts & arr

Thanks for the great ideas but I actually want to learn how to look at it and love/like it (in a ring). Earrings are too easy to loose, so I don't want to do earrings. (I love rb studs, though.)

Tell me why you love h & a's.

thanks again

Those are both good suggestions for you if you like the "out of sight out of mind" approach! That would be a great option!

If your issue is more of a "mental" I-don't-like-it then I will tell you why I like modern stones (as well as old cuts). Firstly, I LOVE a modern ideal cut's overall balance of performance! They are very reliable! Then also, I love how you can pretty much do whatever you want to them setting-wise and they just keep on ticking and look fabulous. I actually have a preference for them in <=1ct over an old cut (for me, it's because old cuts tend to be quirky, and so not having to deal with the quirks in a smaller size is a bonus).

Thanks BC. Yes, I don't want to do an out-of-sight-is-out-of-mind approach, as I'm already ok with them in that manner.

I truly appreciate your words, they helped.

thanks again,

i like a MRB because they are very effortless. They could be vintagy if i wanted, they could be ultra modern if i wanted. They dont give of any particular "era" to me, an easy blank slate to make it what you want. Plus i like the overall performance. they are the perfect in between of broad flashes and pinpoint flashes, which allows for me to see more fire. Im typing now next to a window in my house and the fire is shooting in my eye and all over the wall. Old cuts have nice broad flashes, which i also love, but a MRB just is a different animal.

If i were you and i wanted it to be seen, i would set it not in a true antique setting, because i think, for you, you might be sad when you look down at the setting and it has doesnt have a matching old cut in it, but what i WOULD do, is set it in a setting that has a nod to old settings, so it reminds you of old rings, but a revamped version.

something like this

or a nice tacori.

Hi SC! Hope all's well and that the inheritance is a positive and life-affirming gift - I admire the spirit with which you're approaching the problem! You know I'm more of a CS fan than diamond, but I love nice H&A's for the same reason bastet mentioned - they go with absolutely anything, and they seem to enhance the eye-catching potential of coloured stones with lower RI. They seem less 'trendy' than old cuts, but also less insistent, like they don't have to be the center of attention in a piece. If you feel like a blowout, there's always the option of pairing it with a similar rock as side stones for a truly fabulous 3-stone ring - I'll help you find the middle! :naughty: Otherwise, what about a scaled down version of this ruby-bearing monster from first dibs, or this Brian Gavin lovely of Beachgirl's?

Edited to add: I also feel like the complete symmetry of an H&A lends itself well to more organic and flowing designs - I just don't have any pics of them on hand! Will scout a bit more once the sun comes up over here :snore:

G'day CM & thanks for the reply ! How ya goin'? (wikitravel, aussie slang).

Well, I do love the red and white combo and that color combo is one I've thought about adding to my collection over the past few years, actually.

That BDG setting is positively awesome and unique. I have to bookmark that. I've never seen that one before. Thanks. I think a big part of my issue with h&a's are the symmetry. (In most design, I prefer asymmetry to symmetry.) That setting changes it up and makes it part of something truly unique/different.

Maybe I need to look at h&a's as a precision performing stone in a ring that can still be somewhat unique overall.

OK, I think I'm getting there.

thanks so much again,

Agreed. A modern cut in a vintage type setting doesn't work. Thanks so much for the link, Niel.

I wonder if maybe a sholdt or a maevona might be up your ally, if you like that BG. maybe ultra super modern is the way to go....

maevona has some over the top ones, but a lot of really beautiful ones ones, that dont go too far. The Fern and poppy one i think are pretty cool

or one of the more unique sholdt ones

Re: Can someone please tell me how to love a rb hearts & arr

I like the comment about them not having to be center of attention. I do tend to think of old cuts as needing to be center of attention (and that would also fit in with why I tend to like them bigger rather than smaller). Maybe that is why when I contemplate (over and over and over) the thought of doing a 3 or 5 stone I gravitate towards the idea of modern stones because its easy to make them work together well. In that respect also I think they do make a good support structure (compositionally) for CS. Nice way to put it.

Wow...this thread could actually help me figure out where to go with my modern stone (which I love, just don't know where to go with it)... :loopy: Now I just have to get over the fear of de-haloing.... :errrr:

Re: Can someone please tell me how to love a rb hearts & arr

I don't love them MRBs; they seem so splintery. But I doubt if I've ever seen a real H&A in person so I can't say that I don't like them other than the fact that I don't love MRB stones, especially when they are bigger. Little MRBs are fine to me because I can't really stare into their splintery-ness; I'm fine with my itty stud earrings and the ideal cut stones in my Memoire eternity band.

I inherited a 1 CT MRB that is really a poor diamond (I1-I2, I-J, crappy cut) and I've just sent it off to be evaluated for a recut, so I may end up with a H&A, but I'm setting it as a pendant. Hopefully I can come to love it, and you will come to love yours too.

Re: Can someone please tell me how to love a rb hearts & arr

Thanks Niel. I do really like the fern setting ! Unique & asymmetrical but still pretty.

Bing. That totally hit the nail on the head. I knew I should discuss this with you all and can't thank you enough. I wouldn't have realized these things or thought of these great setting ideas by myself. Huge thanks.

BC, three stones are wonderful. I think you might consider that.

Re: Can someone please tell me how to love a rb hearts & arr

OP - have you seen the one you are inheriting? Is it in a ring setting or loose?

Honestly I don't love all H&A RBs... only some. I do see them as individuals with their unique personalities. Even H&A RBs with largely the same specs look different to my eyes.

If I inherited one that I intended to keep and was okay with re-setting it, I'd have it removed from its current setting and then just keep it loose for a while, looking at it, gazing into it, getting a handle on how it performs, and then I'd figure out its best setting.
