Anyone had any experience having to remove a bezel set stone from a setting? My Ering came and the setting is horrible. THAT will be another post as I reach out for help.. I wish I found this sight BEFORE I let her set the stone. Now I have to have it removed where I live here in Vail, Colorado and I am worried its a difficult process that not many jewelers can handle. I want to make sure the stone is not damaged during the process, of course.. but also would like the setting to stay somewhat intact as I am sending back to her with the close up photos I took of the MANY many things wrong. [You won''t believe it when I post them.. ]

Also, what do you think is a ballpark price of what it should cost me to have the stone removed? Any input will be appreciated and I realize pricing may vary state to state.. I just don''t have any idea.

Thanks everyone.. when I scale down the pictures of the ring, I will post them and seek advice on finding someone to do the custom work.

I dont know what it costs to remove it, but I wouldn't touch it until you know which new setting you want. Then, I'd take it to the place where the new setting is, and let them set if for you, including removing it from it's current setting. I dont think the removal of a bezel is a big deal but I wouldn't take the stone out until it's ready to be re set. Right now, at least it's protected. Also, you should have the stone insured when it's re set just in case anything happens to it during the re setting process.

The setting must be returned to the jeweler who made it ASAP. I''ve been quoted $35 locally but I forgot to ask about liability when working on my diamond.

I see. Well if you dont already have the stone insured, get it insured BEFORE you let anyone work on it. That way it''s covered regardless...I''d love to see this setting that you dont like...Any photos?

I agree with surfgirl...get that baby insured before you let anybody work on it.

Just a caveat - check the insurance policy carefully to make sure they will cover the ring while it is being worked on, not all companies will cover for this type of procedure against damage to the diamond - rare but it can happen.

Thanks for all your help. My BF took it and had the stone removed without getting insurance, etc. Luckily it all turned out fine, and he didn''t even charge us anything. I went in to speak with him about actually making the setting for me because my BF seemed to think this guy could do it. I will go back later this week to talk to him about it some more.. (Initial conversation impressed me, but it could have been the European accent, LOL) ..as well as see some samples of his work. He mentioned "hand forged from platinum" when making my ring for the look I desire, but he didn''t talk about the PRICE. I imagine, it will be a lot. At this point my BF just wants in done, but perfect and doesn''t care WHAT the cost. I will have to weigh my limited options.

The ring I am looking to reproduce very closely is a Tiffany setting called: Round-Brilliant with Melee Diamond Border Ring. Its on the website, see link posted below.

When acegirlbda had Leon Mege design her ring she described the setting to him and though he does not do reproductions you can tell this ring was the inspiration.

My adobe photoshop is being reinstalled on my computer after upgrade to Windows Media (btw I LOVE it. Tivo on 500 G external HD) So photos of my bad setting will be up later tonight.

Okay.. here are the links for tiffany ring that was the inspiration. This is the ring I want made with my diamond, obviously it may not legally be exactly the same... I don''t know what copyrights there are and what I kind of trouble I could get into by saying so! Anyway, mine may have channel set all around the ring so it would be different, I just haven''t decided.
