Can I buy a ring from Tiffany/Cartier and have the diamond replaced with a larger/better color/better clarity one?

Would Cartier/Tiffany be willing to do it? What about other reputable jewelry retailers?

If the new diamond is larger would it fit in the original setting? If so how much larger can I got beyond the original size before that is a problem?

Can I buy a loose diamond and have it placed in the setting?

IF T/C would do it, and I''m not confident they would, they would crazily overcharge you for it I am sure.

Other vendors will certainly let you do it, but depending on the setting and size change you probably would at least have to replace the head and maybe the entire ring. Do you know what kind of setting you want?

I believe both of those have integrated heads, meaning that you can''t just plop a new head on. And like I said, I would call those stores, but I really doubt they will replace the stone in your ring. I think you''d have to get a whole new ring there...

NF is right - with integrated heads, you can't easily change them. Since it's the head that really makes the Tiff solitaire distinctive, removing that head from the shank to place a new head in would be defeating the purpose of retaining the classic Tiff. look.

How much larger a stone you could get depends on what size you begin with. If you begin with a larger stone, you may have a bit more play than buying, say, a .75 stone in the setting. The .75 stone setting likely wouldn't work well if you go up to 1+ ct.

If you are planning to go the upgrade route, one way to do that would be to get a stone that is the size you'd like to end up with but to get it in the lowest color Tiff offers, which is I. Then, you could 'improve' or upgrade the stone by getting about the same size but improved color/clarity. This only works, of course, if you desire a higher color ultimately. If you're happy staying with H/I, then it may not benefit you.

I think tiffany will allow one upgrade but I''m pretty sure you have to spend double to do it. I don''t think tiffany will allow you just just swap out the stone unless it''s within the orignal 30 day return period.

do you mean you just want to buy the setting from Cartier/Tiffany and then set your loose stone?
They won''t do that... at least the stores I''ve visited didn''t want to

No they won''t. He wants to buy a smaller stone now and then get a bigger stone later when he can afford it.
