If you arrange it with both vendors and they are agreeable then yes, the only thing is to check concerning if the setter will accept responsibility should anything happen to the diamond whilst setting. This is rare but not unheard of, most will not assume liabilty so you might have to try to find insurance which will cover the diamond whilst setting - this isn't always easy.

You may be lucky and find the second vendor willing to set the diamond. If the diamond is a princess cut it may be less likely due to the fragile nature of the pointy 90 degree corners. With round diamonds, there is far less risk in most cases. The issue of who covers you in case you are not pleased with the end result often occurs when two chefs make the stew. Will either party accept blame or responsibility? Doubtful.
It is way better to do the entire transaction in one place if possible. If you don''t mind some aggravation and risk, then you will eventually find someone who will do the work needed to put it all together.

Most vendors would rather ship directly to you or to an independent appraiser than to someone they see as a competitor. A few get along well enough with one another that they’ll agree to your plan but it’s the exception, not the rule. In many cases you can have it shipped to an appraiser who can do the necessary evaluation and documentation to start an insurance contract as Lorelei suggest and then have the appraiser ship it to whoever will be doing the setting. They can then send it back to the appraisal for final inspection and the documentation to ‘update’ the insurance policy to cover the entire ring.

Make sure the person doing the setting has personally seen both the mounting and the diamond and agree that the job is going to work out as you expect before any work begins and while you are still within the return period of both components if they say otherwise.

Most of the PS vendors work well enough with each other that this is a valid option provided that there is communication between all parties ahead of time, however I personally prefer that the customer see the diamond and have it evaluated by an independent appraiser prior to having it set to ensure that the customer actually likes the diamond. Imagine the hassle and disappointment created by having a diamond set and discovering upon receipt that it''s not quite what you had in mind... At this point the inspection / return period for the diamond may have lapsed and many settings can not be returned once set - in fact, actually setting the diamond will void most return policies!

The only reason I can think of for having the diamond set by another vendor before seeing it is to save a little bit of money on shipping and it simply isn''t worth it IMO.

You have received some great advice here, especially concerning the concerns that Todd and I have.

You can ship a diamond to many people, myself included and we will be happy to mount it for you, but most, like me, will not assume liablity for a diamond purchased elsewhere.

If we ship a diamond for you and you mount it, it is now sold and no longer returnable, so Todd has hit the nail on the head with his comments about that.

All of that having been said, I can think of many dealers on Pricescope that we have both sent diamonds to and had diamonds sent from. You probably have a larger availability of competing friends here on Pricescope than any where else on the planet.

Thanks for all your helpful responses. Even though it may be possible, it sounds like more of a hassle than it''s worth! I will just stick with a single vendor.
