Can I bug people for thoughts on this stone?

Hi guys!

First off, huge thanks to all who contribute here, this forum has been incredibly helpful - but now I need some advice!

We just purchased my stone and took delivery of it last week. I love it and although I though I'd done a ton of research beofre buying, I didn't find pricescope until afterwards. I was looking for a good balance between quality, size and cost but with the primary focus on quality and was advised to go for a GIA EX cut with EX polish and symmetry. This is what I ended up with:

0.64 E VS2

Depth 62.9%
Table 55%
Pavillion 41
Crown 34.5
Star 50%
Lower half 80%
Polish EX
Symmetry EX
Cut EX
Girdle Med to slightly thick

Price paid £1,490

The only reason for my slight uncertainty is that when I entered it into the HCA it only came out with a score of 2 - probably the 41 pavillion coupled with the depth (does this count as a steep-deep?). I'm probably shouldn't worry about the numbers but since I chose this stone online without comparing it to others I'm wondering if I could have got a more spectacular stone for the same money (I have time to change it)? What do you think? I'd be prepared to reduce the colour to an F but psycologically I don't really want to go below the colouless rage (I know, silly), I'd also like to stick with the VS2 and I love the size of the 0.64. I know, I don't ask for much!

I really do love the stone and I've peered at it from lots of angles to search for the dreaded 'leekage' without much success. What do you think - a good balance or should I keep searching?

Thanks so much in advance.

2 is fine. it''s not a steep/deep.

You shouldn''t see any leakage there, it is a well cut stone!

There are 2 factors that can cause a stone like this GIA Ex cut grade to have an leakage.

1. If the optical symmetry is "traditional".
2. With the depth of 62.9 its pushing the boundaries of the GIA Ex system.
3. If variances or deviations on the pavilion (primarily the pavilion angles) are all over the place.

We recently examined 2 GIA Ex''s with the same combo you have here and one safely was in the AGS Ideal zone the other was a 3 due to leakage. The one that had the leakage wasn''t what I''d consider a total train wreck but the leakage was visible when both were compared side by side. If you can get more data it would help.

Many thanks for the comments so far.

Rhino - what additional data would help determine which of your 2 possibilities I have here? Since I didn''t come accross Pricescope until after I''d bought the stone I went with one of the bulk stockists rather than someone like Whiteflash or GOG (I''ll know for another time

). I can''t fault them for service but as a consequence I don''t have access to any idealscope images or similar - is this sort of thing I''d need?

Thanks again guys!

You could buy an idealscope and take a picture with that? I think the price in US is around $25.

It would help amongst other things, but Jenn unless you are considering sending back or changing this diamond I wouldn''t worry too much, it is a well cut stone you have by the numbers, certainly better than most you would see. I take it you are in the UK, where did you buy it if you don''t mind me asking?

No, I’ve no plans to change it unless it looks like I’ve got a turkey but it sounds like it should be ok. It certainly sparkles a lot and in dull lighting it still looks bright with no dark patches – no idea if this is a decent test though. However, I’m going to get it checked over tomorrow by a local jeweller just to confirm it matches the certificate so I’ll see if he has any comments on the cut. If not I’ll probably order an Idealscope and check it over for my own peace of mind. That said, it looks pretty damn good to me and if I was to upgrade the cut I’d probably need to go down somewhere else which I don’t fancy doing so maybe ignorance is bliss!

Yes, I am in the UK (£ gave it away hey!). I actually went through qualitydiamonds.co.uk, had I found Pricescope beforehand I probably wouldn’t have gone through them since WF and GOG get such good press but I really can’t fault them. They did me a price match against bluenile which knocked £450 off plus they had the setting I really liked. The info on their site isn’t great but they were happy to search for stones and send me spreadsheets with all the specs and links to the certs. Mind you, I’ll reserve judgement slightly until I’ve had everything checked over tomorrow - will let you know!

Thanks again all, any other comments welcome!
