Can heat from a blow torch cause more clouds?

Dear all,

I have a ring that is given to me and it is GIA certified. The clarity is SI1 but its totally eye clean. When i first got the ring, the diamond was beautiful and nice. i was very satisfied but the size was too big and i had to resize it.

After the resizing and when i got back the ring from the jeweler, i notice that there is some cloudy patch that seem more obvious than the time when i first receive it.

The swirls of clouds is more obvious when i view it in a dark room litted with a study lamp (yellow light). Even in the store''s flouroscent light, i notice the swirls that i did not notice before..

Did the resizing cause the clouds to appear? I''m a novice here... thank you all.

Should not be. Diamonds are very good conductors of heat, there will not be spot heating. Maybe it is not clean up well after the job? Ask the jeweler or get an independent appraiser to look at the ring and stone again.

It could be some setting compound or maybe the residue of heat on the diamond, take it back to the jeweller ASAP and show them as a first step. Maybe then a pro cleaning would help.

Yes..., a torch used can burn the surface of the Diamond...
It can be fixed by re-polishing the specific burned facet(s).

But do get it double checked by an appraiser....

The ring was bought sometime back in June... it wonder if its too late to go back and ask the jeweler.

I hesitated and was quite embarassed to ask such questions as i know the sales person will definitely say there is nothing wrong with the diamond...moreover there is a cloud near the surface of the table, i''m sure they will say its the cloud near the table.

Diagem, how do jewelers do resizing? do they resize when the diamond is set in it? (simple solitaire design) i wonder if the blow torch can have any contact with the diamond?

I would get an independant appraiser to look at it, here is the appraiser listing

It can''t cause more clouds ... but it can affect the diamond, most likely with burns on the surface, which could possibly look the same to the naked eye. If there is no burn on the original plot, and sizing is the only work you''ve had done, it''ll be pretty easily attributable to the jeweler. Like Lorelei says, take it to an appraiser and see what they have to say - then you can go back to the original jeweler if you need to with every confidence.
