Can a feather get bigger over time? I know the diamond that you wear will not undergo as much stress as it does when its cut. But, can a feather get bigger from normal wear and tear or a big bump against something? I am just wondering if something like this could (or has) happen(ed).

Yes, I even witnessed in the past a Diamond drop on a concrete floor and split in two (on the natural plane).

RARE!!! But a possibility...

In regards to feathers becoming bigger over time..., never heard of such a tale in its polished state (after the cutting process.)
But unfortunate it does happen sometimes during the cutting process...

open to the outside feathers can expand from water expansion with temperature extremes.

You would shatter the stone anyway even without a feather if it got hit hard enough to break in most cases so impact really isnt a huge issue.

The cleavage planes are diamonds weak points especially princess cuts with the corners being right on one.

Strm, i hope this will make sense:

The cleavage planes of Diamonds are the hardest part of the Diamond.
(That’s why it is nearly impossible to polish a Diamond parallel to the plane itself.)

If you look at JohnQ’s (two sided) profile sketch, you can clearly notice that four natural planes merge to form the Princess point/corner (two on the crown and two on the pavilion)… That is where the “weak spot” is, add the fact that you have a sawing plane in between these natural planes and you have found the weakest point of a Diamond.
Imagine a hit on the point/corner of the Princess…, its actually vulnerable to all four directions for possible chipping!
