My fiance and I are looking at buying a ring through an antique dealer. It is a 2.12 carat center diamond with one .10 carat diamond on each side. It is a European cut, L1 in clarity and H/I in color. The appraisal says the side stones are the same color and clarity. The mounting has a four prong miracle style head with four prong fish eye heads in the shank for the accent diamonds. The shank is a half round tall style. Platinum. (I got this text from the appraisal.)

I love the ring, it''s so pretty and looks great on me. I don''t remember seeing any visible flaws in the stone when I looked at it, but doesn''t an L1 mean that I should have? There is no certification with this ring, only an appraisal done in May of 2005. I tried to attach a picture but it will only let me attach one here so I guess that''s that. I do have a photo of it head-on.

So does anyone have any advice for me? Is this a decent ring? I don''t need something totally perfect and flawless, but we don''t want to buy something that isn''t a good peice that I can pass down to our children?

Help!

Hi Alie and welcome

My hubby and I bought and OEC ring when we first got engaged way before pricescope. It had a store appraisal that sounds similar to the one your describing. What I did learn later was that I waaaaaaay overpaid for the stone and setting I purchased. The stone was beautiful and appraised at pretty close to what we thought it was by the original vendor, we just paid too much for it. If there is a way the seller will send it to an indepenant appraiser to look at before you purchase or has a good return policy that you can return it after you buy it and take it to and appraiser to make sure you are getting what you pay for. Your appraiser can give you the fair market value of the stone and setting so you know you are paying a fair price.

do you mean I1 clarity? i''m not familiar with L1 (that doesn''t mean there isnt'' such a thing!) either way, if you love the ring and feel you are getting a fair price, you should get it. passing down jewelry should be more about the sentiment than the monetary value anyway.

Yes, I meant I1...sorry!
