Just wondering if it is still possible to get a dud diamond if the Idealscope image is good? I am getting nervous waiting to get my diamond appraised.

Scintillation and brilliancy are somewhat different variables, but they are generally connected. One must keep in mind that diamonds tend to be cut in ways that give good eye appeal, so no one would take valuabel rough diamond and go out of their way to tke the time to make a styrange, highly brilliant diamond and fail to make it sparkle. In part, this is the nature of a faceted diamond and expert craftsmen add value by cutting it in ways that people desire. So, don''t worry. High light return and scintillation sort of ride along together.

Hi diamondheart,

This is a tough question because diamonds scintillate differently depending on ...

a. Their major facet proportions.
b. Their minor facet construction.
c. The amount of facets on the diamond itself.

Ie. A diamond can have what is seemingly a great IS image yet not have "sparkle" factors that appeal to what attracts your eye most. For example there are diamonds with great IS images that place more of an emphasis on broad flash, then some on pin flash and then there's a mix of the 2. The only real way to determine which is best is by viewing them side by side and seeing which appeals most to you.

The labs (particularly GIA and AGS) have what they consider to be sufficient scintillation to garner their "Ideal" or "Excellent" grade for light performance but IMHO this optical characteristic is one that is a tough characteristic to grade since different sparkle patterns appeal differently from personality to personality. This should be seen and compared to really know which appeals most to you. I made a short video on this subject to better help consumers understand the subject which you may find interesting here. Hope this helps.

Kind regards,
