can an engraving inside a ring be removed?

I saw a really pretty antique ring with engraving on the inside that said from MM to JK 1940. It was a pretty good price and I wondered if it was because of the engraving on the inside being unremovable.

I would think it would be fairly easy to polish out an inscription.

I think that engraving is really neat.... Just think, that was 64 years ago...right about the start of World War II... It's a piece of history, a mystery to wear.
