Can a small table compensate a shallow OEC?

I am trying to educate my self as much as possible and there is so much knowledge here so I am hoping you can help me again.
I am wondering if a shallow OEC (depth about 55.5%) can be a good performer if the table is small (about 42%)?

Please give me your opinions Thanks!

Theoretically, yes. It would also need to have a very shallow crown height. Kelpie's diamond is an example. But it will not have that classic OEc profile.

It can be, but it depends on everything else, too.
Mine has a 57.9% depth, with 47% table.





I think you can't go off only numbers for OECs.. Each one varies.

Almond, don't be upset. What do you mean you lost a deal? Was this a preowned item someone else snagged up first? Or an auction style purchase (eBay)? Either way, no upsetz allowed! There are always more diamonds

LOL. Well, I am still learning.

I know your diamond and think it is very well cut and was curious if it fit what I had said earlier about shallower crown angles being good for shallower stones with smaller tables. And sure enough, I think that 31 degrees is a fairly shallow angle. Ideal MRBs are in the 34.5 range and some classic OECs can be in the 36 degree+ range.

I guess you can see why table size matters. Holding the diameter of the stone constant, as the table gets larger the crown angle gets steeper and can easily become out of whack with the pavilion on a shallower stone.

Still, OP I would not puposely seek a stone that is shallow: Under 60% and I like to give the diamond careful inspection, and under 58% and I get more concerned about compromised optics. Still, I do think most of the bad effects of an over shallow stone are apparent even in poor photography.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but I consider 55.5% to be a different work of depth compared to 57.8, and 42% is much smaller than 47.6% table. With diamonds, very very small changes in proportion can throw everything off. And equally important to either of these numbers are the crown and pavilion angles and lower halves.

I measured the depth again yesterday and it was 57%, but you are right, small changes make a huge difference and it probably wasn't anywhere near Madelise's beauty.

I am not looking for a shallow OEC, just happened to come across this one. I will keep looking for a nice OEC.
