can a princess cut be recut into an RB?

Does anyone know? I have a princess stone that's nothing special, only .67ct but faces up like a .75 for what it's worth. It's set in an ER that I never wear and I'd like to put a fun stone in it, and use the "princess" in a 5 stone band I'm longing for.

thanks

Probably doable as long as you are willing to take a massive drop in carat weight and there is not inherent defect/inclusions in the stone.

thanks Stone Cold - I did wonder about the drop in weight.

Have you fired off an email to BGD yet? They have done wonders and I *think* the rate is pretty reasonable. Just give them a call to see if it is even possible - I'd be interested to know the answer to this question as well!

I personally wouldn't even bother. You can pick up a 0.5 ct on ebay for pretty cheap. I rather spend it on a net new diamond then spend the money to recut at this size.

It's hard to imagine it's feasable unless you are really attached to this particular piece of rough and are doing this for reasons other than budget. Your weight loss is going to be substantial and your costs are going to be considerable.

Here's a thumbnail for estimating finished weight.

Take the smallest diameter of your current princess and deduct 10%. Figure that for the diameter of the finished stone.

Figure the depth at 60% of the diameter. If that's more than the existing depth, use the existing depth and work backwards from that to get the diameter.

Length x width x depth x 0.0062 = Approx weight for a round brilliant.

I believe the princess cut was designed in part to maximize yield from the rough, so it wouldn't be too much of a stretch compared to cutting a round from a piece of diamond rough the size of your princess. The problem is that you'd lose a good deal of weight in a stone that's already not huge to begin with. I think you'll get more bang for your buck if you reset the princess into a pendant or half of a pair of earrings and look for a 5-stone band separately.

hmmm.... I think I'm going to lean towards this. CharmyPoo makes a pretty good point - it may be slightly less to re cut, but at what cost? There will be weight loss... and then you are spending more to receive less, back.

Maybe a new stone is the better option....

Thanks for all your responses. The diamond as it is doesn't have anything in particular going for it, so even if I set it in a pendant (which is where it has been before) I might have it polished up anyhow to maximise. It's otherwise just wasted where it its. I do agree that I can buy a new stone a similar size to what I would get, for a fair price. I just don't want to have too much lying around that I never wear.

Thanks again everyone.

They do not fit well inside each other.
A 1ct princess would yield around a .53ct modern tolk. 34.5/40.8
You could go for a 60-60 and get better yield in the 57% range like this one.

Even going to a flat top round with poor performance wont get you over 75% retention.
This particular princess has a higher crown than most so your numbers may be even worse.
yada yada yada virtual results may not match real world for a lot of reasons....inclusions and different angles etc.

When re-cutting other shapes to RBC the original stone is treated like a makeable rough crystal. Figure 40-50% loss as a rule of thumb for princess. Perhaps a bit less in rare cases where there's more crown to work-with.
