Can a diamond be scratched when creating an "air vent"?

Hi. I am new to PriceScope and am not sure of the proper forum to be posting this question in. I have a solitaire engagement ring that was set with "air vents" (not sure of proper terminology) only on two sides of the stone with a solid gold siding on the other two sides. I was recently in to see my family jeweler and he said he could cut air vents into the other two sides and did so. I know that it is almost impossible to scratch a diamond other than with another diamond, but is it at all possible to have touched the stone while cutting the vent and/or damaged it by doing this? I am not noticing anything diferent in the appearance of the stone (in fact it looks more brilliant now that more light is getting in) but realized after the fact that this was a possibility. I'm assuming he wouldnt' have done it with the stone still in the setting if there was any danger of scratching.

Thanks.

I'd guess that anything is possible. I'd ask him about it. How did you discover the scratch? Where I'm going with this is did you see it under the loupe or you felt it with your finger??

She has not actually seen a scratch, if I read her post correctly, just wondered if it was possible.

I'm not really sure what you mean by air vent, I'm guessing you mean cutting open scallops into a bezel?

Yes it is possible to damage a diamond while it is having any type of work done in a workshop, the risk is very minimal though, especially if you have a skilled jeweller that cares about what they are doing.

It's probably more likely that a jeweller could chip a diamond rather than scratch one, especially on a princess cut or any other cut with pointy corners like a marquise or pear shape. The risk for damage could also be greater on a diamond with structural clarity issues or clarity enhansment.

I,m sure you jeweller would have let you know if there were any problems, if in doubt get it checked.

Oops, my mistake.

Thank you all. I do not see a scratch nor do I believe there is one. I have an asscher cut diamond and from what I can see through the "vent," the bottom of it is bent away from where the hole was cut into the gold so I doubt anything happened. The part of the diamond that would have been damaged is the side/bottom, not the top. I was more just wondering if the tool used to cut through the gold to make the "vent" could scratch the diamond, as I do not believe it chipped. But as you said, this is a reputable jeweler and he would have told me if there was an issue.

"Air Vent"?

can you post pics of your ring? I'm having trouble following what you had done to the setting and I'm curious. :))

Not sure what an air vent is, but I had a diamond buyers guide book that told a story of a person who found a diamond in a safe deposit box after a family member had died and someone tested the diamond to see if it was real by trying to scratch it with something other than a diamond and the sharp tool scratched it... the stone did turn out to be real. A real diamond with a long scratch across it!
