Huh.
Australia Post advised me that I can’t ship anything but a letter or documents to the US currently.
Apparently tariffs have to be paid BEFORE the goods enter the US and the rate depends on the origin. The actual tariffs are between $80 and $200 per parcel plus processing fees. Australia Post has to find a company to do all the paperwork and fee collection.
So I guess that means a $6 jar of Vegemite will cost $20 shipping plus $80 tariff and $75 customs processing.
Wow.
I’m sorry for anyone in the US who receives “care” parcels from overseas relatives or friends because the cost will now be astronomically ridiculous.

I would happily pay an exhorbitant amount for Violet Crumble and Anzac Biscuits =)2

Don’t forget Caramello Bears and Iced Vo Vos.

It's not just Australia post. It's postal services all over the world from what I gather. People are advised to use other carriers who offer DDP to avoid the initial hassle.

It will be only temporary until things settle. I imagine most of the postal services and carriers just want to prevent having a large number of shipments returned or destroyed because recipients refuse to pay the duties owed.

I haven't tried either of those because my Aussie friend never told me about them. I would call her out about that but she lives in France now and I don't want to ruin my chances for a free place to stay when I visit, lol. I can find Tim Tams at my local grocery much to the detriment of my hips.

What I heard on the news was that the tariffs are too confusing to these companies so they are halting certain types of shipping until they can figure it out. But of course, it keeps flip flopping so who knows how long that will be.

But it's okay.
All that tariff money will go to a very very good cause.

.............. American billionaires. :dance::dance::dance:

the tariffs are too confusing to these companies

Would you blame them?

Really though, I’m not sure that’s the actual reason. The tariffs are a known concept that these companies deal with on a daily basis all over the world. International shipment arrives and is held at customs, duties are calculated, importer pays duties, package is released and delivered. The US simply no longer has a de minimalis exception which means now all incoming packages will be held instead of just those of higher value.

There might be some confusion concerning the size of the tariffs as that seems to be ever changing. But I’m inclined to believe all this ultimately leads to citizens not being familiar with the process of releasing their packages from customs, and the consequent chaos that will follow while they learn.

My point was the ever changing nature of the current U.S. tariffs. Not that the companies don't know how to deal with stable tariffs. But the fact that they can't anticipate them from day to day.

I was inquiring about a Christmas item on a popular website. It was available and then it wasn’t - in early August! I called the company and was told there had been a big purchase order for this item, but that the purchase order had been suddenly cancelled. I was told not to expect more of this item to be in stock. Could be many reasons for this, but can’t help but think that the tariffs could have been at play in this case.

When I lived in the UK and decades later Ireland, I always had to pay duty on Xmas and birthday gifts from family in the US. There was no minimum below which purchases were duty free, either. Just something new for us in the US to adjust to, that other countries have long done.

How can you tell if your Vo Vo is Iced?

It’s just the maddest name in my opinion.
They have a plain biscuit base that is topped with a pale pink “strawberry” icing with a strip of strawberry jam in the middle and tiny coconut flakes all over the top.

Similar warnings have appeared in the news in UK too.

DK :roll2:

My local supermarket has started stocking Tim Tams too! I lived in NZ for years & they were my go to favourite. A friend used to send them to me, but now I can happily chomp down on WAY too many without having to ration the packet. Defo bad for the hips!

I just received a package that had monies owing from tariffs. First time ever, the package was sent COD as the vendor company had paid the import fees ahead of time. Made it pretty seamless, even though it was a tad expensive. Typically, in the past, the shipping company collected the fees. This was for skin care products.

ANZAC biscuits are terrible serouse here and across the ditch (the Tasman sea ie in Aussie) you cant just put anything in there and call them ANZAC biscuits, so no dried fruit no chocolate chips
of course in the privacy of your own kitchen you can do what you want just dont call them ANZACS
now i beleave that the Aussie biscuit is slightly crisper than ours, i think they might use more butter ? and the biscuit spreads more
ours are more chewy
the Edmonds cook book is the biggest selling book in NZ for many generations
this would have been the recepie we learmt to make at intermediate school when i was 12 or 13
the mixture before it goes in the oven is so yum

in can never be called a cookie
every year some one gets done for being dumb and not doing their due dillagence

some history from my favourite you tuber
he does great reachearh and always shows respect

i would loved to have sent you some form my work (ours are a bit crisp)
they keep for ages
everything in the bakery is just made from stuff you would have at home just in large quanties) i realise you might not have goldne syrup
golden syrup for those that dont know it ......imangine sugar is oil
gold syrup is like crude
it dioes taste pretty yum
but is nothing like maple syrup
it is available in the UK too, maybe its a commonwealth thing ?

@Daisys and Diamonds Thank you very much for the offer of the Anzac recipe. I'm not much of a baker so will continue to get them online when I can, although I admit at this point I'd rather pay the tariff as protest for that US policy =)2

I just read that the reason many foreign postal services are now saying they won't ship business packages or merchandise to the U.S. is simple: The de minimis exemption is going away. And it's not just postal services. DHL, said in a statement that it “will no longer be able to accept and transport parcels and postal items containing goods from business customers destined for the U.S.”

Added duty fees alone would probably not cause the end of so many shipments to the U.S., but the problem is that the rules are not clear about:

  • What kind of goods are covered by the new rules
  • How the duties will be collected.

Can you guys still buy Labubus or no? Or are the Labubus for sale in your country taxed already?

I don’t know why anyone would want to do business with the US at this point. They put these policies in place and they affect millions of people, not just Americans.

We are now the country of chaos and fear. It’s not like people didn't know what they were choosing. Project 2025 laid it all out for everyone to see.

sometimes you guys have things we cant get anywhere else -and its a trusted market
although the last few years the postage has got a bit steep ( not as steep as the UK)

its the uncertainty of it
i do not blame the post office (s)
we were assured we would only be getting a 10% tarrif like Australia and them wham its 15 %
its like a lucky dip
how can anyone run a bussiness involving international markets with conditions like this ?

I don’t know why anyone would want to do business with the US at this point.

The sad part is, there is plenty of good business to be done with American businesses. In the jewellery world some of my favourite vendors are located in the US. Outside of it I have bought a number of quality things, either US made or distributed (because I could not for the life of me find them in Europe) from American businesses.

But the hostility with which the US government has approached international trade is making this impractical.

I just hope that PrecisionGem doesn't retire by the time all this blows off and I get off ban island. I really want to have at least one more stone cut by him.

@Avondale and @Daisys and Diamonds, I understand how you feel. Please know not everyone here agrees with what is happening. It’s been horrible to watch. Apparently half this country thrives on all this chaos. I find it all very sad.

We had yet another horrible school / church shooting yesterday. No one even talks about them anymore. Guns are more important than our children. How does any of this make sense to people from other countries?
