Hello dear PS experts,

I've been an on and off poster on the boards but a constant lurker for years now - and am back to ask for your help in selecting a diamond.

Unfortunately, most of my lurking/posting happens in the non-diamond related boards on PS, so I haven't caught on to the diamond buying expertise as much as I would have liked to.

I'm looking for a RB stone - budget is not super high ($2500 ish) but I'd like to maximize the sparkle and wow factor of the diamond, and get as close to a 0.90 as possible. I'm not color sensitive, which should help my cause.

I've been searching through the PS tool and see a number of new vendors with generally lower pricing than the usual Whiteflash/Blue Nile/James Allen. I do feel more comfortable purchasing from the known vendors though, and have had an excellent experience with Whiteflash in the past. A few I've found:

This is nice, but I don't think I need to pay the premium for a G color...

I believe this isn't too close to the Tolkowsky/ideal angles because of the wide crown and deep pavillion?

I have a cheat sheet from years ago (Maybe Gypsy put it together?) and have found a few diamonds, but I believe you can do better than me, and can find me a real stunner in my price range.

Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!

I know that you meant your title as a joke but I absolutely hate it. I'm confused by your post because you said your budget is $2500 for a stone but both stones are way over your budget. What's the true amount you're willing to spend? Also, the clarity on the SI2 is just sick. Are you willing to go that far down in clarity too? If so, you should be able to get what you want.

Yikes - yes the title was a joke, didn't mean for it to hit a nerve.

Thanks for your response - that is the conundrum - I haven't been able to find what I'm looking for in my budget. When I plug the numbers in the search tool the results I see are over my budget. Hence the post asking for help.

I've seen many PSers rave about their eyeclean SI2s so I don't think it's really "sick" but again, that's why I've reached out for help.

I think they were talking about that particular SI2 that you posted, it's pretty rough looking. I doubt it is eyeclean, but there are those that exist.

thanks for clarifying wbarnwell! didn't look too closely at the picture - i was too focused on the numbers!

and this precisely is why i need help

Hi SB.

Don't you know the diamond deities are Goddesses?

I think the best luck you will have will be to call ID Jewelery and see what magic Yuketeil can do for you. Look for an eye clean GIA Ex cut J SI2 to get the size you want.

thank you Dreamer - you ARE a goddess :appl:

really appreciate your response. i've left a message for yuketiel and will let you know how things progress.

in the meantime, if anyone comes across a suitable stone, please post!

I like this idea. He will be completely honest with you about the clarity and will not give you anything as dirty as what you posted.

Did you not see the picture of the stone you posted? Yes, there are plenty of eye clean SI2 stones, but the one you posted was definitely not one of them. I'll look around, but I'm still unsure of what your true budget is.

Here's an option:

i would like to stay under $3000

I second or third calling ID Jewelry. You might see if he can find you a J wihth a bit of helpful fluorescence in it. The fluor will usually bring a little discount and can help stones with some tint look whiter in UV light situations.

thank you all for your responses.

i've had a heart to heart w hubby and he's said his top limit for the stone is $4500. This should help widen the pool a bit. I will spend some time tonight searching for something that gives me the biggest bang for the budget.

These all squeaked in at <=2 on the HCA so could be worth looking at. I'd wait and see what the real sleuths come up with:

A 60/60 stone, so will lean towards white light, 1.2 HCA:

http://www.jamesallen.com/#!/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.90-carat-I-color-SI1-clarity-Excellent-cut-sku-202359

A H/A stone that JUST made 2 on the HCA, already has idealscope image. DOn't forget there's a PS discount that will save a few hundred off this one. It's a little steep and really ought to measure about 6.2mm:

http://www.jamesallen.com/#!/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.90-carat-I-color-VS2-clarity-sku-197615

And I was curious to see what a 1ct stone under $4k looked like. I'm not sure it's actually eyeclean despite being VS2, and it's a J, but it scored 1.7:

http://www.jamesallen.com/#!/loose-diamonds/round-cut/1.03-carat-J-color-VS2-clarity-Excellent-cut-sku-199039

Good luck!

The thing I like about IDJ for budget stones is that I think that Yuketeil is good at picking out the stones that look really great in person but might not be so awesome on paper. If its for a pendant for example, I would even consider an I1 stone if he can fid you a good one! And I would consider VG cuts that are sdinged for less influential aspects of cut. Yuketeil seels really good at picking out those type of stones. For a search like this I think getting a vendor to do the looking for you is the best.

You posted all the time with me in the baby boards on PS with another name right? Remind me who you are?

DD, i'm in AWE of your memory  yes - you and i had our 2 kiddos around the same time and compared notes in the preggo boards (sbde)! you also helped me pick out BOTH my push presents, so i'm glad you saw this thread...

the diamond i'm looking at is for a ring. i've gotten some feedback from a number of vendors including Yuketiel and was hoping you all could narrow down the choices and pick the winner. i'll post details and IS images separately. stay tuned!

Diamond 1:

GIA
Carat: 0.90
6.22 x 6.24 x 3.82 mm
Color: J
Clarity: SI2 with Feather, Twinning Wisp. Vendor says it is 100% eye clean
Cut: Excellent

Additional details in attached certificate.

the first stone looks good.

thanks for your response diamonds are friends...why would you pick the first out of the 4? just trying to understand what makes it better..

1) Price? GIA report? Can't read what you uploaded.

2/3 ask if there is a reason for $150 difference. If virtually indistinguishable, pick the cheaper. Or pick the one that is whiter.

4) Might have a little leakage. Ideal Scope? I feel like you should have a 1 ct options since you upped your budget (PS discount should bring it in budget): http://www.jamesallen.com/#!/loose-diamonds/round-cut/1.02-carat-J-color-SI1-clarity-Excellent-cut-sku-183977
Or just to save a little: http://www.jamesallen.com/#!/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.91-carat-J-color-VS2-clarity-Excellent-cut-sku-177998

JulieN - thank you! i actually really like the last James Allen one you posted - I will request an IS image from James Allen and post what I find.

For #1 Here are the specs that I can read:

Crown: 33.5%
Pavillion: 41%
Table: 57%

Can't read the depth but have asked the vendor to clarify. Price $3200

JulieN, Dreamer - here are the specs on the first diamond.

I honestly, would go with #1 because it's at least 1k less than the others and the idealscope looks great as do the number. IDJ is wonderful at finding stones like this at really competitive prices!!! I think it's a winner!

i think i'm going to take it! the HCA score is 1.1....we've seen the IS image...is there anything else i need to look at before pulling the trigger?
