After much research, I''ve pretty much settled on an emerald cut center stone from Whiteflash. I just wanted to pass it through here and hear what you guys might have to say. All comments and advice are greatly appreciated. By the way, Bob Hoskins of Whiteflash has been awesome throughout this whole process.

Table 67

GIA lab report

The Sarin report provided by Whiteflash list the crown height as 0.47mm (9.1%) and the pavilion depth at 2.88mm (55.7%). Both the table and culet are 0.03mm off center.

He sent me a picture of the loose stone, and it does look nice. Obviously it is hard to appreciate the true beauty of the stone without seeing it in person. So, any thoughts?

Thanks

Do you have a price? I'd prefer a higher crown height and I wouldn't mind a stone with the table and depth numbers reversed (table % lower than depth). However, ECs need to be seen so it's possible it's a gorgeous stone if WF says it is.

The price of the center stone is about $5K. I also read on this discussion group about the preference to have the depth slightly greater than the table. Plugging the numbers into the gemappraisers website yielded a 3B stone. Not the best, but I realize that these are just numbers. The thing that hurt the stone the most was the crown height. After reading the glowing praises for WF posted here and on DT, I have no reason to doubt their expert opinion. Bob has told me that this is a very pretty stone. Of course, buying it without seeing it first hand is a bit nerve-racking. I just want to know that I am getting the best 1 ct EC I can for the money I have budgeted.

So anyway, what will a lower crown height contribute to? And why is it usually preferred to have the depth greater than the table? I would have assumed a larger table would make the EC appear larger.

Thanks so much for your input.

You know it does kind of suck that important cut information such as crown height and pavilion angle, are not readily available. To get this information, I had to make a committment to a particular stone so that it could be brought into WF where they could produce the actual Sarin report. This makes it difficult to compare sevral stones within a price range. Because they are held in different locations, you basically have to agree to pay for the shipping of each stone you are interested in comparing.

Hi Newbie,
I purchased a 1.11ct. emerald cut from Whiteflash in February. If you do a search on subject Emerald Cut or EC you might be able to read the story about my purchase. I would tend to agree, that crown height might be a bit low.

Is your budget approx. $5,000?? I paid just under that. I ended up looking at four stones total in person using an appraiser as the point where the stones were shipped so that I didn't have to pay the purchase price up front. Three of the four I had Sarin info on ahead of time. I estimate that I spent approximately $200 for shipping the stones and the appraiser's services (not including the detailed appraisal on the stone I finally selected), but on a $5,000 purchase spending 4% to compare and have the purchasing experience I wanted was worth it.
