I was watching the Gem Shxxxing Network the other night.
They have a guy from Australia who regularly visits the show with Argyle Mine diamonds (he also does opals). Anyway, he announces that he is about to show some pink diamonds at amazing prices (so what else is new; every deal is the deal of a lifetime; every item is a bargain, etc.). So for fun, to see how good a "deal" he would offer, I continue to watch. He shows a .39 carat, cushion or emerald cut (can't remember), pink fancy intense deep (or whatever the category right before vivid is - he might've said "fancy deep"), VS2 (it might even have been VVS2). It had a GIA cert and was laser inscribed. Granted it was under their perfect studio lighting in ideal conditions, but it looked to have great color and decent cutting. He put it up for auction and sold to the only interested party for $12,500.
So as I'm watching, I log on to one of the more well known fancy colored diamond websites and I see SI pink diamonds of comparable size/color for sale for more, by several $1,000s (interestingly, I see they have been marked down to a comparable price now) - in other words, the gem network had them for less than a vendor. Now I admit to a healthy dose of cynicism, but how can that be?
