I was watching the Gem Shxxxing Network the other night. :o They have a guy from Australia who regularly visits the show with Argyle Mine diamonds (he also does opals). Anyway, he announces that he is about to show some pink diamonds at amazing prices (so what else is new; every deal is the deal of a lifetime; every item is a bargain, etc.). So for fun, to see how good a "deal" he would offer, I continue to watch. He shows a .39 carat, cushion or emerald cut (can't remember), pink fancy intense deep (or whatever the category right before vivid is - he might've said "fancy deep"), VS2 (it might even have been VVS2). It had a GIA cert and was laser inscribed. Granted it was under their perfect studio lighting in ideal conditions, but it looked to have great color and decent cutting. He put it up for auction and sold to the only interested party for $12,500.

So as I'm watching, I log on to one of the more well known fancy colored diamond websites and I see SI pink diamonds of comparable size/color for sale for more, by several $1,000s (interestingly, I see they have been marked down to a comparable price now) - in other words, the gem network had them for less than a vendor. Now I admit to a healthy dose of cynicism, but how can that be?

Typically they buy in bulk and cut out a number of middle men so can keep the prices at a lower rate than competitors.

I saw that same show too!! And guess what, whoever got that fancy deep pink got a great deal as it was around 39 points. It was a bit shocking to me. Most of the time, they do not have decent pricing, but every once in a while, you do get a shocker.

Here's another fancy diamond they had on yesterday, I tivo GSN and took a photo of the television (yes, I'm very weird). I think this diamond was going around $30K for the ring. It was a light yellow, but a huge size, around 5 carats. Some of their material, like newer material is extremely overpriced, especially if it's one of their precision cut gems with bad color. However, their fancy pinks were a great deal the other night. They had GIA reports too.

Also, I had to post the photo of this 1.7 ct emerald they had on today. To me, after tivoing tons of GSN and watching so many emeralds on their various programs, and on other shows, this had to be the finest emerald I've ever seen on the television. It was an estate piece from Tiffany & Co. (with documentation from Tiffany & Co.). They wanted around $30K for it. I almost fell off the couch when I saw it.

Thank, that's interesting but I'm not sure that was a great price.
Here's a 0.37 Fancy Intense purplish pink SI2 for $6350.

Keep in mind secondary hue modifiers like brown will lower the price.
I think purple does not change is much from pure pink but don't quote me.
Prices for FCDs can swing a lot based on other things not obvious, like windowing, or if a Fancy intense is right next to Vivid or down next to Fancy.

But I'm really glad FCDs are getting some media attention.
They are soooo cool and not that many people know about them.

Okay, for a second there, I thought I was going crazy :loopy:  - I actually thought of logging on to PS and telling folks there was a great deal on a pink diamond! But then I thought there had to be a catch, or since I don't know much about colored diamonds, I thought maybe it wasn't such a great deal...

Nice screen shots, TL! That emerald is beautiful - do they disclose treatments?

I think it was a fancy deep pink, it was darker in tone, and more saturated than the one you are showing here.

Only when it's in their best interest to do so. If they don't know the treatment, they don't mention treatments.

I would describe it as a lot closer to magenta than the one you are showing...

I might have it on Tivo still, I'll try to get a screen shot. Yes, it was more magenta, which is why I thought the price was amazing.
