So, I''m supposed to be dropping my stone off tomorrow to be set.
Today, I got the "new" quote for the platinum Sholdt semi-beze". The original quote was for 18k as they thought that''s what i wanted.

The new quote is $4200. I''m shocked

. This is a plain platinum setting. No additional stones, nothing!!
There are two more dealers in my area who carry Sholdt. One won''t sell just the setting, and the second is Michael C. Fina. I''ve been to Fina many times and know they''re way overpriced so it''s pointless for me to go there.

Am wondering if this is at least close to what you paid or am I getting ripped off in the typical nyc fashion.

Btw, I already put half down on it but am now having second thoughts.

*bump for you*

Sholdt does really make some beautiful half bezels! I love the way the bezel "integrates" gradually into the shank, unlike some of the other half bezels that I have seen that appear to just be sitting "on top" of the shank.
What did the other dealer (that wouldn't just sell the setting) quote you? I think you should find out if this is the average price for that particular Sholdt setting. If you are finding much lower prices elsewhere, maybe tell the store who quoted you 4,200 and see if they would match the lower price. I know there are similar styles out there (as posted above) for much less, although I have yet to see one that looks exactly like the Sholdt. If 4,200 is the correct retail price and that is more than you are comfortable spending, I would personally rather have the white gold version of the Sholdt, than get something in platinum that isn't quite the same design.
That is, assuming there are no other platinum half bezels out there with that same "integrated" bezel look as Sholdt, for significantly less $$.

Dreamer_dachsie, Thanks for the bump

strmrdr, the Whiteflash version is bulkier than the Sholdt and the bezel is thicker or I would have gone with them.

MissRocks, The other dealer wouldn't give me a quote on the setting alone. The conversation ended when i told him i had my own stone.

I'm also wondering if the quote is higher as this place doesn't usually sell their settings without stones either. They're doing me a "favor" by allowing me to use my stone. Just seems rather expensive. I know platinum prices have gone up, but I still think I'm being overcharged.

edited to add: I'd get the WG version in a heartbeat if i wasn't allergic to it. If the 4200 is the actual retail price I won't complain either. I just can't seem to find out.

Have you checked Pearlman''s or Winfield''s to see if they could get it less expensive? I would also see if someone could make it less expensive. Have you asked MarkM or Leon? They might not be less expensive but it is worth checking.

I contacted Sholdt right after I decided to purchase the stone from Whiteflash regarding working with a different jeweler.
Their response was, "If we have retailers in your area you must go through them".

I was recently looking into Sholdt settings for a sapphire that I''m thinking of buying. Check Dimend Scaasi''s site. He has two of the Sholdt settings up there with pricing. I think the one you want is here. I think Dimend Scassi won''t sell the setting without one of their stones. You can get an idea about pricing though.

Also, I called Joseph Gann in Boston (one of the authorized retailers) about the twisp setting and Justin was very nice on the phone trying to ballpark the price for me (in WG) and said he could call Sholdt for an exact price when they were open. I did not ask J.Gann whether they would set a stone in a Sholdt setting that I had already. Hope this helps.

Lifeisgood-
Thanks for the info and yes, that is the setting.

So the bottom line is i'm being charged more than double.
I'm sure it's also because I'm not getting the stone from them but that's still pretty harsh.

I'm supposed to be dropping it off tonight and will tell them what I saw. Hoping they'll come down on the price.

Also going to call Scaasi and see if they'll sell the setting.

Again, thanks very much.

Edited to add: Just called, they won't sell their settings alone.

elle, you might still give them a call and see if they can get them in. I don''t know about Winfields but I know Pearlmans has been able to get in settings of lines they don''t carry on their site. it would be worth a call at least...

mrssalvo, thank you so much, calling was a brilliant idea!!
I spoke with Mr. Pearlman told him what''s going on and apparently they''re in the middle of bringing the Sholdt line in.
He''s contacting them and getting back to me by 5:30 eastern time with a quote.

OH YEAH!! I doubt it''s going to be as high as my local jeweler!!
Will post back when I get the quote.

I told Bill about the ridiculous quote I was given and posted it on Pricesope, then Mrs. Salvo had the brilliant idea to call Pearlmans even though Sholdt wasn''t listed on his site!!

Again, thanks so much.

P.S. Lifeisgood- If I were you, I''d also give Pearlmans a call.

OMG!! Bill Pearlman just called back.
$2500 for the SAME setting!!!

We're talking a difference of $1700.

WOW, a big thank you to Pearlmans for their help.
And a big thank you to mrssalvo for saying "call"!!

You both just saved me $1700.

I'm so ecstatic right now I wanna do my happy dance, but I don't think it'll go over well at work.

Pearlmans is now another vendor I would recommend in a heartbeat. Plus, they have a great selection of settings. If you can't find it on their site, definitely call folks.

elle, that''s even better news. I have no doubt you will have a wonderful experience working with pearlmans too!!

wow, pearlmans does sound wonderful! congrats

make sure you tell your local jeweler to kiss your....

Honestly, while I''m beyond happy I totally feel like I was taken advantage of. I mean that''s a pretty big difference. Just not right.

Also, I called them right after speaking with Bill so they can credit the 2300 I had paid already and they gave me a problem. she goes "You know, we don''t refund but since you just paid, and we don''t yet have the stone, we"ll do it." I was shocked and said, I was given the OPTION to pay half. I wasn''t required to pay at all until I gave you my stone!! And no one told me it wasn''t refundable.

I''m stopping by Saturday to get the confirmation number because I''m not convinced. I didn''t tell her I''m getting the setting for less. Just said I changed my mind so she wanted to hold on to the payment in hopes I''ll find something else there I like. I insisted she credit me right away and she said she would. I hope it''s true.
I also called my credit card company and they said it takes up to 30 days to show up. Apparently credits go through a different company.

OH, (sorry i keep posting in my own thread don''t mean to bump it)

Mike, I just realized you''re the one getting the Kretchmer. Excellent choice. Tension settings are my favorite and I would have got one if I was able to wear
it on the same finger as my wedding band. Bunz, Kretchmer and Niessing are actually my favorite designers. Def. post pics when you get it!!
