Hi Gypsy

Hoping you can help - I'm looking for an emerald cut, budget around 3K - must buy from James Allen due to overseas shipping/payment issues. Looking for DEF colour and no lower clarity than VS2.

I'm new to emerald cuts - is this a good one?

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/emerald-cut/0.80-carat-f-color-vvs1-clarity-sku-386508

The intention is for it to be for my husband (to replace a ring he lost) although the option for an EC is a new journey - I am still torn between that and a princess.

Hope you can find time to help. I would be extremely grateful.

Many thanks
:)

A bit - my original budget was $2,000 so increasing to that amount would be almost double. If it were for me, I would buy it but I'm not sure he would appreciate it, to be honest. He lost the last ring I gave him which was a D/IF princess cut.

It sure looks nice in the video though. Thank you for looking for me Chrono.

How about an asscher instead since it would be square? Will the diamond be set into a band for him?

Thanks Gypsy. Of those 3, what would be your order of preference?

What do you think of the Asscher that DS suggested?

Thank you so much for your help.

The first has the best spread. But the performance is uncertain.
Get an ASET of them all, then we'll help you pick from there.

I can only get 3, is it worth getting one of the Asscher DS posted or are the 3 emerald cuts the better choice? I like the shape of the Asscher but it looks slightly cloudy on the north facing central triangle, or is that just my eyes? If the Asscher is worth getting an Asset on, then which 2 of the emerald cuts should I request assets on, do you think? Thank you so much for your patience :)

I personally do not feel you can appreciate an asscher at 5mm. And I think the EC's give you more spread.

So... personally I'd stick with EC's. But that's me.

Thanks Gypsy - I think that is a fair point. I will request assets on the ECs you posted and will come back when I get them.

What size was the princess cut you had? That's why I posted the asscher because princess cuts are deep and face up small, too. So I figured if the first ring had a princess, you'd be getting something similar except an asscher. Can you post a picture of the ring you want to make? Because I just picture a square stone so much better than an emerald cut in a man's ring, but I am uncertain of what the setting looks like. See, I am envisioning this, and a 5mm square stone is plenty big enough.

I wouldn't recommend a 5mm asscher for a women's solitaire or anything like that, of course, but I think it would be gorgeous made like the men's Lucida band.

Thank you ladies.

I thought I'd get the stone and then decide on a design.

The truth is I have vacillated between a round, a princess, an asscher and an emerald cut.

And came to the following conclusion:

- A round is too similar to other rings he has;
- A princess to replace what he lost (a 1 carat D/IF) was too expensive and anything less would be, well, less (to my mind, at least).
- Asscher I love but don't want to spend what it would take to get one of a decent enough size to be able to really appreciate the faceting.
- The emerald cut was a late contender as it's a cut I know nothing about, it wasn't originally on my list so after looking at some rings for inspiration and reading some of the threads on PS, I thought maybe that would be the best stone for me. But I have no idea how to judge a good EC hence my request for PS help.

So, thank you DS for finding the Asscher - if I ever have enough funds for a 1+ carat one (for me!) then you and I can go shopping for the perfect Asscher.

Gypsy - love those designs - number 3 I already had in my inspiration folder but 1 & 2 are completely new - do you have other views? Number 4 was a "forbidden link" so I couldn't open that one.

Again, my grateful appreciation to you both for taking the time to work with me on this. I owe you big time! :D

JA have confirmed I will have the assets and gemological assessment on the 3 emerald cuts within 3-5 days - at which time I will have 24 hours to make a selection, yikes! I will post immediate and hopefully you guys will be able to help with the final choice.

DS - I queried the Asscher - I thought I could see the cloud on the video. This is their response:

"With a VS1 clarity, you wouldn't need to worry about the cloud in the asscher. With such a high clarity, the diamond is definitely eye clean and its inclusions will not impact its light performance in any way. However, it was the only diamond I couldn't confidently recommend due to its super small table. It's much smaller than the recommended table range and I feel it would not have stood a chance against these emeralds." :o

That is hysterical!!!! Yet more evidence of their very questionable (POOR) advice. :nono:

Specialty cut from asscher family, AGS Ideal cut (which no emerald cut is graded ideal cut at this time other than these, I believe):

http://www.goodoldgold.com/ecommerce/0-99ct-g-vs2-octavia-asscher-diamond.html

39% table.

http://www.goodoldgold.com/ecommerce/1-02ct-i-vs1-octavia-asscher-diamond.html

34% table

and I could go on and on. So sad PSers sometimes know more about diamonds than the people working for certain vendors.

That stone says not available, so if you didn't put it on hold, someone else grabbed it. It is probably the best asscher I have ever seen posted on JA, although small, it would have been absolutely PERFECT for a man's band. I am just kind of sorry I didn't buy it myself. But I hope whoever does will post it here eventually!

I realize that may not be what YOU wanted, so I understand completely! I hope you find the perfect stone for your project! :))

That is like saying they couldn't recommend my AVR because its table is like 45 and that is much to small. Sorry, I will get over this in a little while.

Hi DS - as I know absolutely nothing about these cuts, I have no idea what he's talking about and that is why I am so happy that you are willing to help me.

I did put it on hold so I think it will be released now.

I shall be very interested to see what they have to say about the emerald cuts and whether what they say, jibes with what you say.

Exciting!

=)

The asscher is lovely. The table is just fine.

I swear, sometimes their sales staff just pulls things out of their tails.

Thanks, Gypsy! They really, really do!

You know I agree with you about small asschers for a woman's ring. But I just thought it would be perfect if she was doing a ring like the Tiffany Lucida band I posted above. In fact, I like it better than the stone in their ring! But again, I have no idea of the style ring she is aiming to make!

Bling Obsession..my advice is to ignore what the reps say and listen to Gypsy on the EC's!

:-) It's a lovely asscher with great potential. The ASET would let us know if there is a p3 issue, if the OP decides to get one.

It really does depend on what she wants to do and what style she is going for. I just prefer to get the most spread (balanced with performance) for the budget. But like I said, it's a personal choice.

FYI - someone put the Asscher on hold as soon as I released it. Hope it was someone from PS so we can see it in all its glory.
