Ok, I need help here. I found myself with a lot of time in my hands and a deep insomnia. Looking through some old posts here I discovered there has been huge discussions regarding the 34 crown - 41 pavilion combo angles.

You cannot imagine my dismay - We are about to spend a good chunk of money on a diamond with EXACTLY (as per GIA) a 34/41 combo. I know this is one of strmrdr favs combos and as in everything else preference is key.

Garry, can you please shed some light on this diamond specs. I will call it quits tomorrow if necessary - I need to 100% happy with this purchase. Is the 34/41 detrimental in this case? Should I go for a less controversial / safer combo? Your opinions are appreciated and well needed.

Here are the specs:
Shape: Round Brilliant
Measurements: 5.97 x 6.02 x 3.71mm
Carat: 0.82
Color: E
Clarity: VS2
Total Depth: 61.9%

GIA certified.

Thank you,

Leslie - PSer in full panic mode...

You saw the diamond in person and loved it what is there too panic about?
(I hope im not thinking of someone else)

storm who cant sleep tonight either.

Well, it seems the 34/41 is one of those "hot potatoes". I did see the diamond - You got it right. Can I trust my eyes? That''s another story. I would just hate to keep this diamond thinking that I could have found something "safer". Jeez, I''m starting to think that sometimes ignorance is bliss.

Hi Leslie, I own one of these spuds.

It's a great combo. No worries, enjoy your diamond.

If it makes you feel any better, there is a brand of diamond sold by one of the vendors that is known for it's extremely good light return and beauty. The majority of stones I see from them are cut to this combo. Must not be too bad.

Please come back and post pics!

Hi Garry,

To answer your questions, #1 not sure and #2 no. I''m trying to find this post from 2007 (with no luck) in which strm was "blasted" by others regarding his preference for this combo. To that, he responded something along the lines "Well, give me all the 32/41s and I find them a home anyday". I found several threads discussing the topic. Maybe other PSers will have better luck finding this than me.

My question was not meant in any way to discredit strms'' opinions ( which I highly value ) or to put you on the spot. I would equate it to going to the doctor for a second opinion sort of deal.

I would like to apologize for my frequent bursts of panic in this forum. I usually have the three C''s ( cool, calm, collected) for most things. However, as a novice diamond buyer, the experience is not an easy one. I''m trying to decide what''s best based on factors that my untrained eye cannot perceive. It all boils down to preference. I don''t think I''m savvy enough yet to know what I prefer. I just want a "kicken" diamond.

Also, considering the amount of money involved here I better be happy or I''ll be sleeping in the dog house indefinitely.

To everyone else who has taken the time to respond to all of my silly questions, a heartfelt thank you. I should join a diamond buyer support group:
"Hi, I''m Leslie, I am a stressed out diamond buyer".

I thank you all again for the reassurance.

No need to find them really. Things/views have changed a lot since then.

When I first came here (2 years ago), this combo (and the 41PA in particular) was pretty much taboo. It didn''t matter that stones with outstanding Idealscope pictures were staring them in the face contradicting how they thought the diamonds light performance would be. But over time, as more of us have acquired such stones, and with the real experts explaining that this combo (with all other proportions being what they should) can be just as beautiful as a 34.7/40.8.

Now, you''ll still find some that won''t touch this combo. That''s ok, all the more for us.

And you''re welcome!
