Calling Brian Gavin! Tell us about recutting diamonds please!

Hi Brian,

Is it possible for you to tell us all about recutting diamonds? I find it fascinating how you take an average cut and turn it into a beautiful well proportioned sparkler!

How is it done? Do you polish all the old facets out and start again? I am really curious to hear all about the process.

I am sure Brian or Lesley will reply, but in the interim, here is the diagram that they sent me of the then proposed recut of my diamond.The gray area is the area that needed to be polished away and the blue represents the new dimensions of the recut stone.

This is a great question and I am curious to know the answers myself.

I received a great stone from WF, but it''s not an ACA and I always wondered if I should send it back and have it recut.

I also wonder how much diamond weight is relost, but I supposed that would depend on original symmetry and cut proportions.

It would be fun to find out this info!

Brian recently recut a stone for a client of mine.

He took an ugly duckling of an Old European Cut and turned it into a beautiful swan. The difference was stunning. A 2.65 OEC turned into a 2.05 Round Brilliant Cut that positively knocked me out of my chair when I opened the paper.

The guy''s got the touch.

My husband has wondered why more people don''t do this. He says, heck, just go buy a big ol'' stone at a pawn shop and recut it.
I''m sure it is not that easy. And maybe there is not much money saved by going this route.
But it does make me wonder what guidelines do you have to think about if you set out to purposely buy a stone to recut.
I''m sure every stone is different and presents different issues. I think the whole idea of recutting is very interesting.

I was wondering that also. It will be interesting to hear from Brian when he gets back. We will all be scouring Ebay looking for big average cuts in the hope that we can end up with a Brian Gavin masterpiece!!

That''s a great idea. There are plenty of not-so-purdy boulders in the Diamond District. My concern is that their crown and/or pavilions are too shallow.

What are the poor proportions to buy that will have a minimal weight loss if recut by Brian?

I find this very interesting, too. But I know from the past that Brian does not really like to do internet forums. That was one reason he had John P. in the past! Another reason is that he might not want to disclose his trade secrets.
