Amethyste, I need your professional opinion.

2 weeks ago I had a manicure at my local nail salon. I do not do
this on a normal basis, I normally do my own, but felt like a little
pampering on that day.

Anyway, now I have what looks like a nail fungus under both pinkie
fingers! I am sick about this. Is there anything I can do?

Bebe,
first, don''t panic :) Everything will be ok :)

I''d like you to take a pic of your booboos so I can see what it looks like, it might not even be a fungus...

I''d be happy to give you my opinion -

Bebe...
I know you are in shock - I am sorry it has happened to you. You should call the salon where you got this and tell them so! You could even report them to the State board - so an investigation could be initialized so that other do not go through this as well...

Here''s what I think:

Onycholysis is the loosening of the nail-plate. It is the perfect environment for a fungal infection to start growing and turn into Onychomycosis, a fungal infection.
Onychomycosis (Fungus) will continue to cause separation of the nail plate from the nail bed and can be transferred to the other fingernails and the toenails as well. Nail Fungus usually starts shortly after loosening of the nail plate occurs. A clear sign is the natural nail looks like the white free-edge is growing down the nail bed and the pink nail bed is getting shorter. The loosening of the nail plate can happen by damage or trauma to the natural nail. Like:

Slamming nails in a door.
Pulling nails backwards on car door handles.
Picking off artificial nails instead of soaking them off.
Using a drill on top of the naked natural nail, causing heat and friction.
Any puncture to the Hyponychium ( the little skin that joints the nail bed to the finger under the free edge )
Wearing toenails too long and shoes too tight.
Cleaning out from under nails with a metal implement.
Fingernails too long for an active life style.
Clipping toenails too short and cutting the Hyponychium.
Strong cleaning chemicals.
Gardening without gloves. <--- ESPECIALLY THAT!!!

I had that happened to me after I got myself in a bad situation where I had to use my hands and nails to grip myself from falling. God it hurt bad

BUT!!! I got this stuff, applied it 5 times a day and in a matter of a month, it was back to normal. It is called Thymol. you can get it in a natural food store on online here:

Thymol on amazon

don''t worry about the reviews saying it took a long time for the toenails to grow normal. Toes nails grow 4-5 times slower than finger nails... I''d give this a shot before going on anything else orally.

Let me know what you think :)

Thank you so much !!

So you think it''s just damage to the nail bed and not fungus, yet??

When the tech was filing my nails, she was using the roughest, coarsest file!
I almost stopped her because I felt she was tearing the edge of the nails.
Should have!

Maybe the file did the damage - dunno.
I will check out the Thymol and get some ASAP. Thank you again.
(and I want the Shellac manicure when I get my nails in better shape)

Bebe,
If she used the roughest file and when she was doing the back and forth movement, it is possible it
caused damage to the nail.

I don''t really think you have fungus... baby it with thymol and you''ll be ok... :)

I''m no nail tech, Bebe, but it sounds like this salon could be doing better in its nail services and/or equipment hygiene. Did you notice/check to see if they were using fresh nail tools on you? I would still complain.

She did open a new package of tools to use - but the coarse nail file wasn''t in that sterile pack.
The tech was rough. I always do my own nails - I think I do a better job than they do. I''ll never go back
there. In fact I''ll probably drop by and show the owner my banged up nails.

I always thought you used a fine grit file on delicate nails. I should have stopped the tech.
No offense, but the tech barely spoke English. I had to ask her to repeat herself many times over
and she didn''t understand how I wanted my toes done.

I''ve actually had this problem for the longest time and have been putting off doing something about it. After following this thread, I went ahead and booked an appointment with a dermatologist.

Toes look ok, though one is borderline !
And to top it off, I slammed my foot into
a chair and now I have a black and blue toe.
I bet I lose that toenail!! Does it ever stop ????

I was actually going to start a new thread for this very reason. I've lost about 2 mm of my pinky nail. I googled it and I think it's either a fungal infection or a yeast infection.

Here's a picture of my pinky normal on the left and "different" on the right.

Can I use tea tree oil even if it's yeast? I like tea tree oil for many things, and hopefully for this too? thanks :D

Hey there :)

i am not sure if it is fungal. did you have acrylics on before? it looks like the nail bed underneath has retracted a little causing un-eveness of the free edge and is more prone to peel or breaking in odd places and shapes.

you can try the tea tree oil. but you can also go to the pharmacy and try the anti-fungal liquid medication sold in the nail section or in the foot care area.

at night - but deliberatly on your pinky, cover with saran and go to bed. It should help. :)
