Greetings all,

I found this website just 4 days ago and have already had many sleepless nights trying take in as much info as possible on what is clearly a topic that many share a passion for. I've never posted on a forum in my life and I am amazed by the amount expert knowledge available in this format.

Anyway, so based on what I've read over the past 4 days, here is an asscher within my budget that I very much welcome feedback on. I know there will be some info missing as I am still waiting on a reply from an on-line retailer to send me some more details:

Colour: E
Weight: 1.02
Clarity: VS2
Table: 57%
Depth: 68.9%
Girdle: Thick
X polish/ VG Sym
5.64 x 5.56 x 3.83

I think I've attached a photo, but I cant see it. Bear with me, I'm sure I'll get the hang of it soon enough!

Welcome Mickey

Bumping this for you so hopefully Storm will see this thread and help you.

see the dark V in the center?
I think its just the diamond is tilted in the photo but am not 100% sure.
Sometimes I can tell right away if its tilt or a cut problem but in this case its not clear.
Id ask for some more pictures.

If its just tilt the diamond rates a kicken
if its a cut issue then it kicks it down to just nice.

Its worth getting more pictures of.

You could also have the vendor eyeball it for you and discuss that area.
Im kinda a show me type I like pictures over talk but its what your comfortable with :}

I circled the area im talking about.

Thanks Storm,

I didn''t even see the dark V. Will something like that knock the price down significantly? I''ve found this asscher for sale with 2 different vendors with a difference of $1000 in price! I haven''t read much about Excel Diamonds on here, how do they rate by comparison to Good Old Gold and White Flash that seem to be among the favourites?

I should add that it''s going to be near impossible for me to see anything before I buy given that I''m buying from down under. None of my local jewellers (been to about 10) have any asschers. Only 1 knew what I was talking about.

Thanks for the bump Lorelei!

Mickey.

chances are you are never going to notice that center thing mickey...if it is even anything to notice.
37.gif
as strm said, it could just be tilted but even if it isn''t, in real life size, it probably won''t be an issue. we need to keep in mind that we are talking about a 5.5mm object here (go ahead, get out you rulers!). that is about the size of the center circled thing itself in the hugely magnified picture. obviously, that makes the very center area impossibly small.

don''t sweat it too much mickey, it looks like a great asscher.

i agree with belle...my first thought as a bystander was that the pattern looked amazing.

lol re: the 5.5mm size...so true.

Thanks Belle, Mara,

What you say is very true. I think I''ve got wrapped up in all of the detalied analysis. Having said that, I have found the reading (through PS) really enjoyable. I dare say this wont be my only on-line purchase.

Barry from Excel Diamonds has just emailed me to say he''ll check for some more info for me in the morning.

Any thoughts of the setting? All I know is that my GF has small fingers (size 5) and doesn''t want anything wider than about 2mm. Something in a 3/4 eternity style might be nice....

Mickey

OK, I think it''s out of the E VS2 (first pic) and this one. Barry from Excel will be sending me some more info in the morning.

Colour: G
Weight: 1.01
Clarity: VVS1
Table: 57%
Depth: 69.7%
Girdle: Slightly Thick
VG polish/ VG Sym
5.61 x 5.54 x 3.86

Any glaringly obvious differences? Both are priced within $100 of each other. Please let me know your preference and why?

i think i like the first one better. there is more even contrast (between dark and light) especially in the middle.
what about this setting?

Oh belle, absolutely beautiful. SO much better than I had originally pictured in my mind! Do you have any details, where from, band width etc? Any idea of cost? I think asscher E and this would be a great match. I love the split prongs. Is the asscher in this picture bigger than 1ct?

You have excellent taste!

Mickey.

it is beautiful isn''t it!? when you said you wanted around 2mm and 3/4 eternity there was no doubt in my mind this was the one!
the center diamond happens to be 2cts.
3.gif
but i think it would be just as beautiful with a smaller stone. actually...i think someone else here does have a smaller asscher on that band (i will have to look for it). i have no idea on price. it was a custom piece from whiteflash. the width is 2.5mm. with diamonds, you wouldn''t (couldn''t) go much smaller than that.
i will try to find more threads. (and pics!)

Hi Mickey...how exciting!

The first one you posted looks fabulous to my admittedly untrained eye...

I thought I''d mention that I''ve heard great things about Barry at Excel diamonds, and understand they do wonderful Tiffany replicas.

If you decide to buy your diamond from them...I''d recommend you have them mount it for you. I suspect they could do anything you want, very well.

Good luck!

between those 2 I like the first one better if its just tilt.
better windmills.
If its a cut issue then id consider the second but the windmills are kinda funky.

I disagree about it not being a big deal if it is a cut issue.
It is in the place where your eyes are drawn to by the cut which makes it stand out more.
There is a good chance its just tilt however.

In the ring belle posted note how the center area stands out.

Gotcha Storm, I can see exactly what you''re talking about.

So I think it''s the first one unless someone else has seen better that is currently available? Just gotta wait for Barry to send some pics to make the final call.

If pics look good, what do you recommend as next steps? Independent appraisal, or is it safe to go ahead and do the deal?

Mickey.

i think it''s the first one too.
36.gif

the independent appraisal is totally up to you and what you want out of getting one. so i guess the question you should ask yourself is, what am i looking for in an appraisal?
perhaps with that question, you can determine what your next step is.

Hi Belle,

I think it''s just to have a third party confirm that what I''m seeing photos of is what I''m paying for. I dont want to sound rude and doubt the integrity of of any vendor, but the Aussie jewellers have put the fear of god into me about certificate fraud. Maybe it''s their own scare tactic to get me to pay through the nose for their substandard items

i totally understand. it''s not rude at all. it''s prudent.
making a purchase site unseen is a big deal. if this would make you feel better about it, then by all means, do it.

Thanks all. I dont think there is anything else I can ask at this stage, just need to wait for more pics and then work out the next steps.

Thanks again, all comments have been very useful and appreciated.

Mickey.

OK guys, pics are in, moment of truth........let me know

If your having it set in the states then shipping it overseas Id recomend having it appraised mounted by Richard Sherwood then sent to you. Several others have done so with good results.
Not so much for the stone but as a QC check on the overall ring.
Its much better to have him catch it then have to send it back and wait weeks.

There are other appraisers that can do the job that post here:
Rockdoc http://www.consumersgemlab.com/
Dave Atlas http://www.gemappraisers.com/
Neil http://www.gemlab.us/
Are the ones that come to mind.

Good call,

I must admit, I am a bit nervous about the whole process with being unable to see anything. But comments here about Barry at Excel seem very favourable. The appraisal seems like a logical step. I just hope that Barry can produce the setting that belle was kind enough to find for me.

Mickey.

That''s gonna be one good looking ring. Congrats!

Thanks Ellen,

I''m hoping that I might be able to get the band a little thinner. The 2.5mm looks great with the 2ct that belle posted, I''m just a little worried that it might over power a 1ct.

Mickey

Looks fantastic
30.gif
. The photos are really helping. I''m at a disadvantage having not seen anything and am unlikely to. One local jeweller called me about 1/2 hour ago to say he can get some in for me to look at, but he''s over priced and I dont really want to waste his time (although I''m very tempted just so I can lay my eyes on something!). I''m happy with the stone, just need the relativity so I can talk to Excel about the setting. Thanks belle.

Mickey.
