Hello all!
After 17 years I am finally redoing my engagement setting for one I love. I originally sent out feelers years ago and things didn't shake out, but the time is now. I gave these images to my local jeweler (it's vintage from 1st dibs)

And I just got my CAD pics tonight. I did ask for the points of the kites to come down a little, and I am thinking the bottom part of the gallery (is that the right name?) could be more rounded? Any other suggestions?

edit: sorry the CAD images cropped so bizarrely, I'll try to fix

Is the jeweler providing the sidestones?
Are you wanting them themselves to be more elongated (like the inspo) or are you wanting the metalwork to try and elongate the eye?

Or maybe I’m misunderstanding ‘wanting the points of the kites to come down’

The dramatic-ness of the knife edge on the shank will be effected by the final polishing. Just let them know how softened vs sharp you want it.

I noticed your inspiration ring has the kites all inclosed in metal while it looks like your CADs have an area on both sides of
the kites that are "open". Not sure if you wanted this or not.

Dont know what you mean about the gallery being more rounded. Are you talking the rectangular area donut on the diamond or are
you talking about the shank not being rounded (that is another difference between your cad and the original).

That’s not exactly accurate, both the inspo and the cad have open sides on the kites. IMG_3570.jpeg

Hello! Thank you very much for your input. My jeweler has the sidestones, I gave them the green light last week. I like the way the stones look in the inspiration ring, so I suppose more elongated. I would like that top point of the kites by the center stone to be a little lower than the level they're at on the CAD- or will they end up sitting lower like the original inspo ring? I am a total CAD novice :) I'm glad you pointed out the knife edge, I'm not really a huge fan

Hello! Thanks for adding your input- here is the area I mean that I think might look better rounded:

The original ring does have some open area on the kites, but it's not as visible in the image I posted.

What you see (in the CAD regarding the location of the kite placement) is generally* what you are going to get, if it’s approved and production proceeds.
*always exceptions, and also what’s additionally done in finishing/detailing that’s not depicted on cad.

Unless the vendor tells you the CAD is only for ‘general idea’ and is not what is used for actual production. But I don’t seem to think that’s the case here.

if you want an exact copy of the vintage ring you found on 1st dibs - look to see if there’s a brand copyright that might be infringed in your vendor doing so.

It looks like your vendor maybe is trying to do an ‘inspired by’ with their chosen marked differences in their version vs your inspo, to not infringe on another company’s design. Making it their (your) own. Maybe. I don’t know. I’m guessing.

If you find there’s no copyright infringements (like an antique/no longer produced item) tell the vendor that, and that you want to exactly copy it. All the details.

This is all very helpful. This CAD will be used to make a wax model, after we iron out the details then it will be cast.

I do see a maker name in the 1st dibs listing, and the original designer is long passed away- would I do a general copyright search like any other? I've only seen a similar ring of the same era but the kites are set with prongs and not a channel, I do not believe this is still in production

I don't need a totally exact copy, I just want to make sure the ring will look nice once it's finished. I think I'll see if my jeweler can match the underside of the head and where the kites meet a little better. That area looks more angular and abrupt on the CAD than on the inspiration ring.

Thanks again for answering all my questions!
