I am looking at a diamond engagement ring that is supposed to be EGL certified but does not have a certificate. The seller is trying to get a replacement certificate. I am a novice so bear with me...should the diamond have the cert. # inscribed on it? Before I decide to buy, I want to take it in for an appraisal and just wonder if the appraiser can get me the cert. # off the diamond to see if it matches the cert.?

it sounds a little sketch. if it is engraved on the diamond, the seller should be able to show you that. can you get it appraised before you buy it? if it matches up, i guess you don''t really need the egl cert.

It probably does not have a laser inscription. I hope this isn''t an ebay sale. You realize that if there really is a cert, the owner of the stone should get the replacement certificate before you even consider it. You can post the cert information here and people can advise you on whether it is evem worth considering. Honestly, though, EGL certs are sometimes inaccurate, so another appraisal would be necessary. Just beware that some people have bought from ebay sellers and then had difficulty returning the stone.

i read your past posts--- are you buying or selling? very confused!

Okay, I see, too. Knowledgeable people would not buy a stone without some kind of certification. Why haven''t you asked the jeweler to get the cert for you? You probably won''t get much for this stone. Seems like a sad thing to sell an e-ring and lose money unless the engagement is off.

Pink Flamingo,
I had to sell my fiance''s ring last year because of financial difficulties...things have gotten better so I am trying to find her another ring at a decent price...this is through a private seller, not ebay.

hey there,
glad to hear things are better for you guys!
i would start by looking at diamond tutorials here and getting a really well cut stone. egl is not the best idea, unless you really know what you are doing- color and clarity grades are sometimes off, they are more lenient in grading. what is your budget?

eta: Good old gold has a GREAT diamond tutorial site.

Oh, wow, those posts are a year old! Sorry! I agree with PF to go read the GOG section on the 4 C''s. You''ll see that you can get a better diamond at a better price if you do your homework!
