I am pulling the trigger on a 2.089 carat, G colored, round brilliant, GIA Ex/Ex certified SI2 for 15K, and I was wondering if I could/should re-submit it to a different lab for a new cert? Is this possible, or once a diamond is certified it cannot have a new one? Please advise - I really think it should be a SI1.
Thanks,
Mark

Hmmm, funny, but we think that most of the SI-1's we see entering the market today should be graded as SI-2's

Seriously... Which is why we end up rejecting about 60% of the SI-1 clarity diamonds that we look at... So you could send it to a different lab for grading, but if you're looking to "play the paper game" and bump the grade as so many of the mall store type of jewelers and less reputable dealers seem to be doing these days, you'd probably better steer clear of reputable laboratories like the AGS or the HRD or you'll end up wasting your money because they usually run pretty comparable to the GIA in terms of grading and consistency.

Thanks for the feedback - not looking to bump the grade - really means nothing to me since the stone looks great! Just curious about the possibility of running it through a different lab to see if it remained consistent.

Mark,

Dealers do this all the time and it works often enough to keep them coming back for more. See the lab study on the front page of Pricescope for some good information about the variation between the labs or within the same lab on different days.

In the end, the stone is what it is no matter what the grading report says.
