there are lots of pros to buying online one of them being not having to pay taxes... the potential diamond that i found is at a B&M store.. the price they quoted me is competitive but after the sale i have to pay a couple hundred in just taxes..

anyone successfully be able to get the jeweler to lower their price of the ring/diamond since you have to pay taxes? obviously taxes are not avoidable at a B&M store and go to the state but im curious if ppl were able to factor this into their overall price and get a discount....

thanks

Lay it out to them, the worst they can say is no. Everything is negotiable!

Besides paying taxes isn''t so bad, next time you call 911 there will be someone there to answer the phone.

Keep in mind you may have shipping and insurance expenses from an online vendor.

It’s true enough that sales taxes are easier to evade when purchasing online than when buying in a local store but the amount of tax you owe will be the same either way. Just because the merchant isn''t required to collect taxes on your behalf doesn''t mean that you aren''t required to pay them.

Really.

Every state that has a state tax has an identical ‘use’ tax that applies to purchases of tangible property made out of their jurisdiction. Check your home state’s Department of Revenue web page for details on what forms you should use and how and when to submit the money. There’s a tremendous amount of misunderstanding about this so the states will usually have something pretty prominent on their web pages but if you tell me what state you’re in I can help you find a link.

The states are getting increasingly aggressive about this, as anyone who has suffered through a state tax audit recently will tell you. There’s quite a bit of money at stake here and the economy has the states suffering for money.

DH bought my ring from a B&M here in Boston and had the option of shipping the ring out of state in order to avoid paying taxes on it (the shipping costs were lower). He opted to just pay the taxes and take the ring home with him instead of worrying about making sure it arrived and having a friend or relative ship it back to him.

A friend of mine got out paying taxes at a B&M by having them ship it to one of their branches out of state, then he drove and picked it up.

So there are ways to get out of it, but in all honesty I think being able to just take the ring home with you and not hassle with getting around the taxes is probably better. And I''m cheap.

ask your jeweler about shipping it out of state... my b&m gave me the option to pay the taxes or have it shipped out of state to avoid the taxes, so i paid the shipping charges ($74) and saved $910 in taxes
