Hi All.

Firstly let me state that I'm a complete Novice when it comes to diamonds and the diamond industry.
I have been given the opportunity to buy directly from the mine here in Africa.
All diamonds will come with a Kimberley certificate.
I have also been told that if I can buy from source that it is very profitable.
I would like to find out if this is indeed fact and if it is worth doing.

Thank you in advance.

Sounds like a good way to get ripped off.

What's your information source here?

Seriously. You are being fed a bill of goods. This path will absolutely lead to losing your money, and possibly much worse. Obviously someone is telling you differently than this, and it's up to you to decide who to believe, but carefully consider your sources. There's more than money that you stand to lose.

Please listen to Neil, he is correct.

There are big buyers with many millions ready to buy every legal diamond. If they are available to you, they are either not legal, or overpriced, or not really there at all, just as a ploy to get you to a country where you may have to buy your freedom. None of us "small fry," even those who know the game can play in that world, we are not prepared.

It is a big boy's game, and you are not going to do well there.

Sorry.

Hi All.
Maybe I should have added the following information.
The new owner of the mine is my brother so I think I'm safe in saying that he won't hold me hostage and ask my parents to pay a randsom.
Also he is willing to sell me the diamonds for the exact price that he is getting for them from the big buyers out there.

This is a funny thread on your first post you stated that... "Firstly let me state that I'm a complete Novice when it comes to diamonds and the diamond industry" and now you say that " your brother is the owner of a diamond mine?"..

Truly hilarious stuff you could make it up - OPPS he just did

Hi
Did I at any point in time say that I owned a Diamond mine?
If your brother is a Oracle DBA and you are a mechanic does that make you a Oracle specialist?
If that is the logic you wish to apply then please advise which one of the following professions your siblings practice - urology / proctology / gynecology???

Are you implying that you do not trust your brother since he is the mine owner and told you that he will sell them to you at wholesale cost? I am confused by your question. It appears to be more of a trust issue that anything else if the one who made the offer is your own kin.

If your brother owns a mine, surely he has at least one lawyer, or a connection to one, who can advise you on the process.

Shortcuts are harder; if they were easier, it would just be "the way."

Family connections are good.

Your brother owns a mine and you would like to help him out with his downline. If you can make a buck in the process, that's good too. That's now where we're going with this, right?

What's the value that YOU are bringing to the table?

> Money?
> The fact that you live overseas (note: Nearly everyone in Africa has a relative of some sort who lives overseas)?
> Connections?
> Manufacturing skills (rough diamonds are a supply, not a sales ready finished item?
> Distribution channels?
> Advertising and promotional talent?
> Something else?

This is what that other sales channel is doing for their money. Your role is to do these things cheaper and/or better than those other guys. Maybe you can. There is money to be made here, but your post hasn't persuaded me so far that you'll be able to get at it. The fact that you describe yourself as a novice and are asking for industry business advice on a consumer diamond board isn't encouraging.

Please enlighten us with how your brother came to be the new owner of a diamond mine. It takes many millions, usually billions of dollars to take a mine from discovery to being able to deliver diamonds to market. A producing mine would be worth huge money. We are curious to hear the story of the new owner and whether or not the mine is producing diamonds at this time.

Please forgive us if we are skeptical, but what you are suggesting is indeed the stuff of fascinating novels, and even more fascinating if somehow it is true. And even if it is true, you will have a hard time buying a few gems and taking them to market profitably, there is simply too little margin available if you are not dealing in huge numbers. You will need years to learn that part of the business and if you do not know it very well, you will not do well, no matter who sells you the diamonds.

My husband knows a guy who has been trying to get gold out of there for 18+ months. The cost of several trips, a chartered plane (that is how we know about him) and a set of broken ribs and the dude still has nothing to show for it, so it probably isn't as easy as it sounds.
