Buying a Setting Only from Robbins Brothers??

I've seen a lot of topics on this board regarding some shadiness w/ Robbins Brothers and their diamonds.

Here is my dilemma, I already have .75ct family diamond that I want to use for my ring.
I found this setting on Robbins Brothers:

http://www.robbinsbrothers.com/Engagement-Rings/Ring-With-Sidestones/Coast-Diamond-i46433.ring

It is the exact design that I want (square cushion halo w/ round center stone, cathedral setting in white gold). I tried a very similiar Scott Kay ring on a local store and it was beautiful but EXPENSIVE. This ring, at the price they're giving me ($1395) since my stone is slightly smaller than the one they have described would be a GREAT deal.
Which leads me to my concern, is it too good of a deal to be true??

Does anyone have any experience buying just a setting from them? Will the ring be as pretty as pictured? They say they can use a min. of SI2 clarity for the small diamonds...is that a big deal?

I've never bought expensive jewelery like this before (especially online!) so I just want to make sure I won't get ripped off....any guidance would be great!!

check out Gabriel, they have some really nice quality settings. Many PSers have them and have been pleased with the quality and value.

Yes, try Gabriel & Co. On their website, you can request the info for a retailer in your area. It may take a couple of days. I know Good Old Gold also sells Gabriel settings if you want to purchase it online. They have several cushion halos for round diamonds.

Coast, I thought, only sells their settings with their stones in there.

I would try Beverly K, or Gabriel and Co as suggested.

As the designer of this ring, we felt obligated to respond. The ring is correctly priced at our MSRP. All of the retailer partners that we work with are carefully selected to maintain our high quality standards. We are honored that you are interested in a Coast ring to compliment your very special stone.

Sincerely,
Coast Diamond

Skates, that is a beautiful setting!
SI2 on the melee would probably not be noticeable. Can you request F/G colour so they are white, at an optional upcharge? That's only if you WANT whiter stones - it would depend what your diamond is and what contrast, if any, you'd desire.

The listing says SI2-I. I'd skip. I have a setting with ONE included melee, and it stands out and looks dead. Having well cut and clean melee makes all the difference!

Edit: sorry, I read the I color as I clarity. I still wouldn't sit with SI2, though. . Not in melee that has minimal cost to keep eye clean 8)

However, I see this:
Ring Currently Accommodates (details)
Shapes Carat & Millimeter Range
Round 0.90ct-1.10ct | 6.30mm-6.70mm

Your family stone can't be accommodated anyway, since the smallest size they make it for is a 0.9.. unless your diamond's on the shallower end?

And I think it's funny that the vendor, who never posts, just so happened to find your thread. 8) A little interesting.

Oh, and more cherry! Just joined a couple of days ago, has 2 posts but 1 was removed by admin! Feeshy Feeshy!

Haha. Thanks everyone for your input!!

That is interesting that Coast posted on here.... Hmmm....

I know the site says ring accommodates .90 ct. I have talked to them and they can make a ring that would fit my diamond. That's why my price is slightly less than price quoted on website.

You make a good point about having the side diamonds match mine. My diamond is a round brilliant, 5.90mm, H and VS1.

If I ask to have melee upgraded what should I ask for?

H would be fine, me thinks, but I would call IDJ if I were you.. Just to at least get a quote for how much they can make it, and how much a Gabriel & Co setting would be.

It's not the color that bugs me, it's the clarity. SI2? That's not going to be eye clean.. and who knows what quality the CUT is! I've never seen Coast jewelry, but I have been the Robbins Bros. Their lighting makes everything look sparkly, so who knows what it would actually look like when you're home and it's been smudged with finger prints and daily grime~
