I am looking to trade up from my Princess Stone. I am interested in this round stone. It is a private sale threw a coworker. I just got the stats for the GIA cert. I ran it on the Holloway adviser and it came back good see below. I also posted the stats on the GIA cert. What do you guys think of this stone? The seller is asking 13k is this a fair price could you experts give me a fair price to come back at to him? 13k privately seems alittle high to me.

It isn't a well cut diamond and is very spready due to the proportions it looks large for the weight face up. They also want a lot for it and IMO is not a fair price for a used diamond of poor cut, for 13k you could get a well cut diamond of similar weight with vendor benefits and protection.

For that price you could have this....

Or this, non h&a

Sorry but I''m going to tell you to run the other way on this one!

I ran a search on blue nile, and they don''t have any of the exact specs you posted, but a "good" cut G SI2 above 2cts is only $16 000, and a "good" G SI2 at 1.5cts is only $8000. The per carat price for 1.85 should be similar to the 1.5, so I would hazard that the retial price of this diamond is about $10 000 (maybe a tad more). On the second hand market, you should only pay about 30% to 40% of the retail price -- if that!! -- so this diamond should only be worth about $3000 to $4000. $5000 tops.

Personally, I would not buy a "good" cut, I have seen such cuts and compared them to an ideal and it really is not very pretty. "Very Good" is the lowest I personally would go, and only if I was getting a really good deal.

What is your budget for your upgrade? Maybe we can help you find a better diamond for a more reasonable price?

When dealers are contemplating buying things like this they will generally expect to need to recut the stone before selling it. Commercially speaking, ‘good’ cutting is a disaster. They’ll use DiamCalc or something like it to estimate the recut weight and price it based on that less the cost of the cutter and the cost of a new GIA examination. As a consumer I don’t recommend this approach because the recutting business is distinctly more complicated than it seems but it’s worth being aware of what the competition is up to. I wouldn’t expect a dealer to offer anywhere near this asking price. Most private sellers have already visited with a professional buyer or two, have been appalled by the offers and are trying to make a deal with coworkers and such because it pays better. Again, there’s nothing wrong with this plan, in fact I recommend it for many sellers, but as a buyer it’s worth understanding that this is what’s going on.

If you’re going to do a private deal like this, HIRE AN INDEPENDENT APPRAISER to be involved. It’ll save you aggravation, probably save you money and if the coworker you’re negotiating with is someone you have to work closely with in the future, it might even save your job.

Thanks guys for all the good info! I knew you would steer me in the right direction.

I will pass on this one then. I thought that maybe I could get a good deal but from what you are saying it is not worth more then half or less then the 13k asking price. Which BTW I thought was way to high also. Since as I am also going threw the sale of my old stone I have learned quickly that resale is a real kick in the A-- lol. My budget is about 8 to 10k. I am in the process of selling my old stone privately or threw a jeweler. I''m looking for a 1.5 to 1.8 round but also like the oval shape too.
