Hi Everyone -

I recently purchased a 1.7 Ct Round Brilliant from BN with specs below. The stone looked great to me on paper, and looks great in person as expected. I have a couple questions and would be interested in your insight if you care to share.

1) Appraisal - It is a BN Signature Ideal with GIA / GCAL Certs. Can''t find a credible local independent appraiser. Does it make sense to send off and get confirmation on the information I already have in hand and have paid for? Also, the setting will be picked out after the engagement. Would I need to get two separate appraisals?

2) Would it make sense to search for an ''Ideal'' GIA cut without a ''Signature Ideal'' classification at BN or elsewhere and get a 1.8 or 1.9 stone with the same color and clarity for same price point?

3) Anything I need to be concerned / cautious with on this stone based on the specs?

1.70 Ct Rount Brilliant
Cut - Blue Nile Signature Ideal
Color - G
Clarity - VS1
Polish - Ex
Symmetry - Ex
Flour - None
Depth - 61.3%
Table - 57.0%
Crown - 34.5%
Pavilion - 40.8%
Cutlet - None
HCA = 1.3 (Ex, Ex, Ex, VG)
Price - $17,800

Thank you for any and all comments!

HI,
I think you did well. I got something similar from BN in regards to cut and think its gorgeous. As for appraisals if you do one without it being set the appraiser will have an easier time verifying all the quality of it, versus once its in a setting some things are harder to tell. I got the diamond and setting at the same time and I am getting my first appraisal done next week. I have no reason to doubt what BN appraised it at, from my experience here at PS most people end up getting the appraisal for more than what BN usually states it is. As for what you could do more so, depends on your FI''s requirements, I think what you got will sparkle really well and your FI should be very impressed with it.

Looks like you did very well indeed, if I were to buy sight unseen then I would definitely consider this diamond.

Appraisals - you could get the loose diamond appraised and then have the appraiser inspect the ring and give you a suitable figure for insurance purposes once the ring is completed, try this appraiser tool

https://www.pricescope.com/appr_list.aspx

You could go bigger if you wish ( GIA''s highest grade is Excellent by the way) but it is up to you, this should be a great looking diamond you have there.

Ditto above.

Also, getting the stone appraised first and once you set it, the second appraisal will not be a full price for most appraisers, just an additional price if done within a time frame by the same appraiser. It will help you verify the stone is intact and your stone and the setting of the ring is done properly.

With the amount you paid for the stone, I would get it independently appraised.

Good luck. :)

What exactly do you mean by this? i.e. You don't have a PS listed appraiser in the area? You have one but don't know about them, or have only heard not so great things?

As for the stone, you couldn't have gone any safer on a GIA stone with not much other info, looks great!

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

Ellen, to answer your question, the closest PS listed appraiser to my area is 200 miles away. The only options I can find locally are BM jewelry stores - not exactly independent. I'm a little hesitatant to drop in the mail, but I guess that is an option.

Last follow up quesiton - On a round with a high cut quality of this stone, how much size difference will a person notice on a finger between a 1.7ct and a 1.8ct / 1.9ct.

When I started my origianal search, I want to get close to a 2ct stone, but have since decided to sacrafice size for cut. BUT, I do have a little wiggle room in my budget.

Thanks again to everyone for making this process a little easier!

It depends on the diameter measurements, in these larger sizes generally the less you notice size increases.

Why don't you look for a local appraiser that is a GIA Graduate Gemologist in the local area with a lot of appraisal experience. I found one in my area from the recommendation of a friend as the nearest reputable appraiser is 3hrs drive away and only open 9-5 Monday to Friday too. My local appraiser is nowhere near as reputable as the big guns but then I live in a small city too so a highly respected appraisers isn't going to live here. BUT my ring is not as expensive as your ring and my insurer will even take the purchase receipt for insurance purposes too!!!

No, I see. If you mail, go registered and insured. The type that is under lock and key the whole way.

In two similar well cut stones, 1.70 vs. 1.9 would only be slightly noticeable side by side. Alone, in a ring, same look. If you like this stone a lot, I''d say keep it. It''s a lovely size.

Based on your stats, your diamond is great! I wouldn''t have remorse at all...and I would be happy with a 1.7 (you may not notice a huge diff between a 1.8, ect)...

It sounds like a great deal. I kept waiting to get the part of your post that explained why you have buyer''s remorse, but I don''t think you really do! It sounds lovely and the price is good. You might find a 1.8 or 1.9 and then realize that the diameter measurements are hardly any bigger (if at all) than your stone (and there''s a good chance the cut wouldn''t be as good), so I wouldn''t try to find a new one now.

Ok, Buyers Remorse might be a little strong :) I''m just trying to get comfortable with the purchase.

Sometimes you just need a little acknowlegement or encouragement that you''re going in the right direction, ya know?

Thanks for all the comments.

I still have 25 days to return, so I''ll keep looking at it to see if I change my mind, but this is probably a keeper!

Glad that you decided to keep the stone. Just for extra assurance, here is the size information. If you look up information on actual size of varous carat size diamonds, you will find that the difference in diameter between a 1.7 ct and a 1.9 ct diamond is about 0.32mm. For reference, the diameter for a 1.5 ct RB is 7.4mm and for a 2.0 ct RB is 8.2mm. Check your ruler or straight edge to see how small 0.32 mm actually is.

What kind of setting are you planning to get? The setting may greatly influence how large your diamond appears. I know that halos, side stones, and a thin band help.

i know exactly how you feel. i have 15 days left and i''m doing the same!
