What''s the proper way to let my very helpful local jewler know that I will, in fact, be shopping somewhere else?

Though I know I''m making the best decision, I feel bad for letting them help me for so long and ultimately not choose them - but hey, that''s retail. Regardless, I''m still unsure of the most polite way to go about this. Ignore the emails/phone calls until they get the message? Just tell them straight up that I found something better somewhere else? Make up some story about inheriting a diamond from someone, etc?

I''m interested in hearing what you guys say.

I would simply call them (that will make it a tad easier than face to face), and say, I just wanted to call and thank you for all the time and effort you have put in trying to help me. I have ultimately found what I was looking for somewhere else, but I will certainly keep you in mind for future purchases. You were most helpful.

Yep, what Ellen said is pretty much perfect. If they were so helpful, surely they deserve honesty?

1) Agree completely...Ellen''s note is perfect.

2) if they pursue, give them the web address for Pricescope. Then...ask they to get back to YOU with comment.

This is perfect, and remember them the next time you want something that they carry. Not every jeweler can get every deal but but they''ve shown that they deserve your business and are entitled to a shot at it the next time.

Yep.

And thank you all!

What Ellen said is perfect. To the point and honest.

Ditto to the posts above.

A polite call (or email) is all that is needed. Better that, than having to still be spending many hours searching for you without knowing that you have moved on.
