Are there any alternatives or is a bustle the only option to do away with the train.

Further, are there a variety of ways to bustle a dress? Some ways more/less troublesome or pretty?

Sorry for the thread-jack...but it may lead to the solution you''re hunting for!

If you have a good seamstress, she can do an old-fashioned drawstring bustle. She would need to attach bias tape under the gown, in various locations (about an inch long each segment), stitched at the edges to pass a long ribbon through. When you want to bustle the gown, you MOH would simply gather the fabric by pulling on the ribbons and tying a bow. The bustled fabric can either be tucked inside from your butt/waist area, or fluffed out (depending on the design of the gown) to create an old-fashioned looking bustle. My mother''s gown had a bustle like that, and Jim Hjelm gowns used to have that type of bustle back in the late 80''s/early 90''s. I worked as a seamstress in a bridal shop at the time.

You could also have a ribbon loop with attached pearl (so that the big pearl is pulled up when you want to use the loop, but the loop is stored under the gown''s skirt til needed), but that means carrying around your train on your wrist. The other alternative is to walk around holding the train''s fabric on your arm.

More answering the second poster's question than the first -

My bustle was just a simple 3-button bustle. There were three lacy buttons that blended in with the dress, and they hooked into three tiny loops made of matching color fabric. The loops tucked down through the dress, then when it was time to use them, you just pull them through, so you couldn't see them when the dress was unbustled. The very center of my train went to the middle loop, and then the two sides went to the two side loops (duh). I had to have something super easy, since we eloped and I knew DH would have to do it for me lol. I think that's pretty much the cheapest, simplest bustle there is.

A good seamstress will be able to do *a lot* with your train, including many options that don''t look like traditional bustles.

I don''t have the time to find my pictures right now, but I loved my bustle. It was very different, and didn''t look like a bustle at all. It definitely wasn''t everyone''s taste, but it was mine and that''s all I cared about. I''ll post pics later.

The only other alternative I can think of is a detachable train. I wore a Mon Cheri gown with detachable train for my 2003 wedding and it was really the best of both worlds. Didn''t have to worry about bustling and it was almost like having a separate dress for the reception. If you already have your dress I''m not sure what else to suggest, though.

You can always do away with the train. I had mine cut off and the dress reshaped to accommodate the change.

If you can''t do away with the bustle, you can definitely do something different with it.

Here''s my thread with pictures of my bustle. I really didn''t want a big bustle that stuck out, and my seamstress was amazing and had done a lot of work with Melissa Sweet gowns, so this is what she came up with.

Here''s a picture. I know most people like more traditional bustles, but I LOVED mine!
