So I burned the crap out of my thumb while cooking dinner tonight.

I have ice on it but it hurts like a MF (pardon my acronym)

What do you guys do for burns?

First, take the ice off. That makes the burn feel worse. Just hold your hand in cold water from the tap. Then use aloe (plant) if you''ve got it. You can also use any burn ointment. If you think it may become infected, you can use Neosporin or something on it.

I keep a cold cloth handy and apply as necessary. You can take pain medication for it, too.

burns suck!! I get them all the time!!

Ouch! I'm so sorry.

I use this great stuff on my lips called Aquaphor. Apparently, it was originally invented to soothe (mild) burns. And soothe/heal burns it does! If you can find some at a drug store, it's a great salve to have for almost anything. I love it.

ETA: Only use it if the burn is mild.

I did the tap water thing right away and I used some burn ointment from our plethora of first aid stuff, but it ain''t doin nothin! I took motrin earlier for a headache so I can''t take any more for the burn. I was just hoping you guys had some crazy household remedy that would work better

Vinegar, baking soda and butter or something crazy like that?

Mix together 1 part vinegar, 2 parts baking soda, and 5 parts butter...

You have my sympathies. I''ve burned myself one too many times, and other than the cold water and burn ointment (I swear by aloe), I have no other suggestions.

Feel better soon!

DO NOT USE BUTTER!

It is the worst thing you can put on burns, it forms a seal and stops the heat escaping from the skin.

You need to keep it in cold running water for at least ten minutes - sounds nuts, but it''s true, take a long time to get heat out of the tissues.

Flamezene cream is pretty good - don''t know if they have that in the US, or there are some spray things you can get.

I burnt my whole hand making fudge in the microwave - it hurts like crazy so I do sympathise. My dad, who''s and MD, did do mine up with burn cream, sterile gauze and a crepe bandage, but it was big and 3rd degree in most places (which doesn''t hurt as bad as the 1st and 2nd degree bits).

Not sure bandaging is a good idea for small burns - try google!

I just put some more burn stuff on it with a couple bandaids. All''s good, but taking a shower tomorrow will hurt, I''m sure.

Here''s the good news, Nessa Honey! If it hurts like hell, the damage is only on the surface. It''s when a burn DOESN''T hurt for a long time that you''ve got a problem... means you''ve damaged the nerves.

I mean, unless it''s like, bubbling or the skin''s broken or something, in which case I''m guessing it hurts like hell anyway!

But if it''s a surface burn and it started to hurt quickly, you''re golden.

And, yeah, ice. But make sure there''s a piece of cloth between the ice and your skin so you don''t freeze your skin.

i''m kinda late on the post, had a very busy week but anyways for future reference if the burn is not too bad try toothpaste.. yes that right it helps with the terrible burning sensation and keeps it from bubbling up.
