I bought Buried Treasure by Victoria Finlay on the weekend. It''s a book about jewels. If someone has started a topic on this previously, forgive me.
I''ve read through the history of amber, jet and am now up to pearls. I always thought that pearls were formed due to sand but upon reading the book discovered that it''s actually a parasite that gets into the shell of the oyster or mussel and is then covered by nacre. The book mentioned that a pearl is in fact a ''parasite sarcophagus''. Eeeeewww. I still love my pearls though!
If anyone is interested in jewels, I highly recommend this book. I can''t wait to get the diamond section!
