Hi All,

Thank you to those who provided me with some insight on a potential stone I was considering. It helped me to hold off for the perfect stone.

I would like your opinions on the matter of utilizing different sources to piece together the ideal ring.

For example, I had my jeweller bring in a Gabriel & Co. setting that I absolutely love. The jeweller is a trusted third generation family business. Of course, the stone is the last piece of the puzzle - and they haven't had anything in house that meets my requirements/standards. (In large part because of the education and input I've received here, which I'm thankful for). They've brought a couple in, but those didn't quite make it either. I decided to give them very specific requirements, including an HCA score below 2, to meet when bringing in stones for my consideration. That was a few days ago...

Which leads me to my specific question... If I find a stone online, such as a GIA 3*Ex that scores below 2 on the HCA and falls within all measures of Lorelei's preferences, what do I lose by bringing in this stone myself to have the jeweller set VS. allowing the jeweller to provide the stone?

Obviously I stand to save some money in the short term, but what do I give up in the long term? How do jewellers treat stones that have been provided for them when it comes to service/warranties/cleanings etc etc? What risks do I take on?

Thank you!

I bought my stone online and vetted the setting through a local jeweler. My stone was actually sent out to be set, so the local jeweler only acted as an intermediary for shipping to the designer for the setting i chose. Immediately after you decide to keep the stone, insure it through perfect circle insurance so that it is insured during setting. Also, you might incur a setting fee, which could be an arbitrary number made by the jeweler.
