Also I was worried that the setting would start costing too much compared to the diamond I''m getting. How much is normal to spend on a setting with the diamond I''ve selected.

Should I look to get the setting elsewhere? How hard is it to get it set if I buy the setting elsewhere?

I think they're both lovely.

.8 is a good size; I don't think the settings will overwhelm?

I was thinking of this as my setting.

I thought it was simple but nice.

I also saw this one and liked it but thought it might overshadow the center cut itself:

I was also looking at solitaire settings. I think I''ve confused myself lol. Is there a setting that the JA diamond I chose would stand out in?

Thank you
I like the second one!!!

Either one is nice. Neither one would overwhelm the diamond. I like the diamond that Ellen recommended! Very pretty!

I seriously would not worry about diamond cost in proportion to setting cost. My second diamond was a well-cut .36 ct. E/I1 marquise that I swear cost $400, and I had it set into a Fabrikant 18K yellow gold and diamond band that made the diamond look much better than it was. The setting cost 3 times more than the diamond, but it made it look bigger and more beautiful. I wore that for 13 years! You should get a settiing that you really like since you will be wearing it for a long time.

I think they''re both beautiful, but I''m going to go ahead and say I think the second one *might* overwhelm the center stone. .80 ct is by no means small (it''s a great size), but coming from someone who once had a thicker diamond band with a .80 ct, I would go thinner to really showcase the stone -UNLESS- your girlfriend likes thicker rings.

What about this? You can get it in platinum for the same price as the thicker band in white gold:

ooooooh, EBree, I personally like that more than the thicker WG.

To the OP:

Regarding the choice of setting for this stone--have you thought of what you and your future wife would choose for a wedding band? Maybe thinking about how certain wedding bands would look with certain engagement rings will help you pick out a setting for that sparkler?

I like this one the most!! And there is something to getting a thinner band to make the stone "pop".

Also, I agree, spend what you can comfortably afford, on what you like, and don''t worry about it!

It''s easiest to get the setting at the same place as the stone. If you got a setting somewhere elkse, I''d want JA to set it, as it should be covered then. But I am uncertain of their policy on setting''s other than their own, so you might want to check that out first.

Dont forget that pricescope members get a discount at JamesAllen. To activate it I think you just need to use the diamond search tool on Pricescope and click on a JamesAllen Diamond (then you will have the appropriate cookies). ($150 discount on that particular stone).

I got the ring. Now its the fun part. I had two ways I was thinking of proposing. Let me know what you all think:

I plan on proposing on the day we first met and talked to each other.

First Scenario:

I take her to the park. We have a picnic. Then I give her a gift. When we first started dating she gave me this book for couples that you fill with all your moments... pictures, memorabilia, tickets, and fill in the interests and experiences. Well she always thought I threw it away. I was going to give it to her full of all the things we''ve done together throughout our years together. Then I was going to propose to her after that.

Second scenario:

I do the park and just give her the gift. Then, I take her to my apartment where I have all these flowers filled in the room. I then propose to her in the middle of the room.

What do you all think? First or second. my worry is if I wait till the apartment that the effect of the first gift will wear off. But it also could be an even bigger surprise cuz she got the first one and thought it was all done but when we get back to my apt. another one is waiting for her.

I vote first scenario for sure. But um, mind telling us which ring you got?

Lol. sure. It was the James Allen diamond with the Ladies Common Prong E-Ring. I thought it kept with the simple motif I liked but added a little more to it then the four sidestone did.

I have to thank all of you for your great help. I would''ve purchased something that wasn''t the best I could get for my soon to be fiance and now I am getting her a ring I know she''ll love.
