Hey all,

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. I''m planning to propose to my gf and need some help in picking out a ring. My budget is restricted to 3k and I need to find what is best to get around that price range. I have been reading up on whats important. I''ve read that Ideal cut is most important. After that, I read differing things. I''ve searched on Blue Nile but not sure if what I''m getting is the best I can get. I found a .91c diamond with Ideal Cut, SI2 clarity, and I color for 2640. Is this the best deal I can get? Please lead me in the right direction.

Thanks,

Steve

Sorry just wanted to add that 3k budget is for just the diamond. Thanks

Hi Steve,

We''d need all the info to give a better opinion. I found an SI1 for just slightly more, but definitely ideal cut. If upgrading is any kind of consideration, I''d go with a company that has a good policy for that, as BN does not.

Hi Steve!

Do you have a link for the diamond? We need the proportions etc so we can help you. Your colour and clarity should offer more for the budget, check carefully though that any SI2 clarity is eyeclean to your specifications.

Here''s the link:

Also included the info on the reply. Thanks for the replies. Why does BN have a bad policy? What makes the other one better? Just for my knowledge in the future.

Thanks.

So far it looks ok, but we don't have the crown/pavilion angles, which are key. They are on the grading report, but I don't see it posted.

BN's upgrade policy isn't bad, they simply don't have one!

It does look like the GIA report for this particular diamond is not online. I''d also want to be sure that the SI2 clarity wasn''t easily visible. For me personally it would be annoying to pay $3K for a diamond and see a black spot in the middle of it everytime I looked at it. I would need to ask the vendor if it is ''eye-clean'' and get a photo of the diamond. Which may take a little while as I am not sure that BlueNile actually stocks any diamonds. I thought they used a listing service and are showing just about all diamonds on the market as opposed to some of the other reccomended vendors who actually have them inhouse.

Their Signature line is in house, the rest are from virtual inventory.

And I will also add, while it may be eyeclean, BN isn''t the best at always giving accurate assessments. This one is not in house, so you won''t know for sure it''s eyeclean until you get it. I''d also have an independant appraiser look at it.

in the process of learning & viewing LOTS of diamonds, i have to say there is a huge difference between an EGL Ideal and an AGS Ideal. find out who graded the diamond as ''Ideal'' first. also, GIA Excellent cut stones are usually exceptional as well. it''s been my experience that GIA / AGS are a bit more strict on cut guidelines than EGL, with AGS being most strict.

will the setting be yellow gold, or white metal (platinum, white gold)? i ask because w/ yellow gold, you can comprimise on color a bit. with a white metal, you don''t want a stone w/ much color since it will be a more obvious contrast to the setting. i should think you could get a very nice AGS-0 or GIA XXX stone around 3/4 carat, G-Si1, within your price range. i think the .9 carat size will be a little out of your price range IF you go w/ exceptional cut.

after spending several weeks looking at stones, i can tell you that myself & my fiancee would both go with a slightly smaller stone w/ exceptional cut than a larger stone with a more average cut. to us, there is a HUGE difference in how the well cut stones perform, and this difference was more important to us than shear size.

Would you recommend any other sites that I should look at? I''m looking at the one suggested (http://goodoldgold.com/diamond/4201/). Is there any others I should look at it besides Blue Nile?

She prefers white metal to yellow gold so I''ll probably want to keep the color fairly high. I''ll start looking for 3/4 carat diamonds to see a better match for what i want. Hows the one that was suggested http://goodoldgold.com/diamond/4201/?

Thank you all

Actually, it''s been the experience here that with a well cut diamond, lower colors are just fine in WG and Platinum. Here''s a thread full of pics with J''s in Plat.

If eyeclean, I think that''s a great one. And an I in WG will be fine. Take a look at that thread I posted.

Those are not in house, and not worth calling in. The last two are the same one also.

Last one has potential.

How do you know its in house?

The ones that aren''t in house say, Call for availabilty, and they don''t have the grading report, ASET, IS, etc. info posted.

That last stone from JA has potential too.

I think I may go with that James Allen diamond. I found a setting I liked and I think its a good stone. Would I be able to find anything better elsewhere?

Thanks for all the help. I appreciate it.

What exactly do you mean by "better".

And you''re welcome!

I just want to make sure I have the best quality for the price I''m able to spend. I may not be able to give her the biggest ring but I want to at least find the best quality that I can for what I can spend.

I know she''ll love anything I give her but I want to make sure its the best cuz she deserves the best. Yes I know its a little cheesy

Hey, we like cheesy.

I think it''s a fine stone at a great price. Just make sure it''s eyeclean. Also, just a heads up, JA''s upgrade policy is double the original amount spent.

I looked at the image they provided and the magnification. I don''t notice anything. How else can I check if its eye clean? Or can I only make sure after I buy and receive it?

You can ask the vendor if it is eye-clean. The definition of eye-clean is in the FAQ.

Yup.

Both diamonds look great, but as a happy customer from GoodOldGold, I always push them! Here is their trade up policy. Any diamond with a lifetime guarantee falls under this policy:

Lifetime trade up policy

This policy is for all diamonds featuring our "Lifetime Guarantee" and is stated on each individual diamonds web page. Diamonds qualifying for lifetime trade up are round & square Hearts & Arrows diamonds, princess cuts, asschers, cushions and any diamond listed with our "Lifetime Guarantee". Trading up is simple. Trade back the diamond you purchased from Good Old Gold for the full amount of the purchase price (less shipping). At any time you can trade in the diamond you purchased from Good Old Gold and get exactly what you paid (less the cost of shipping) toward a diamond of at least a $500.00 greater value than your past purchase. Once you trade up for another diamond, there are no refunds. You can only trade up again. The diamond cannot be chipped, burned or altered in any way different than how you received it from us in order for us to honor your refund or upgrade. If your trade-in does require a minor re-polishing to bring it back to its original condition, only the cost of the re-polishing, a new (GIA/AGS) grading report and any loss of points on the diamond from the re-polishing would be deducted.
