Hey everyone I''m new to the site. I''m looking for an engagement ring for valentines day. I have already checked a few local retailers and James Allen also Blue Nile. I''m looking for a round diamond and for the setting I''d like white gold and either side stones or solitaire ring. I hope this budget is workable or should I wait longer?

. Your budget is of course workable. Do you have any idea what type of ring your girlfriend wants? obviously if you save up a bit more you''ll be able to buy a larger diamond but you should do what you feel comfortable with. a white gold setting that includes sidestones will eat up much, if not all of your budget. you might want to consider doing just a solitaire or even using the $ to buy a really nice 5 stone band.
 
Hi. Welcome to PS. With your budget I would get a great diamond and have it mounted in a solitaire. You can easily find an ideal cut round diamond around 1/2 carat and I would recommend H or I VS2 or an eye clean Si diamond.

This stone may max out your budget but also gives you more size than you had perhaps planned - could you swing another couple of hundred or so for their six prong Tiffany style mounting? If not, you could go down in size a bit and still have a stunning diamond ring!

Yeah, but unfortunately, when I looked closer it says sold! It would have maxed out in size and budget. He could certainly call WF and see what they have in stock that they could recommend.
 
I know she is looking for white gold and she likes the solitaire style as well. The max for my budget is 1400 and I had this in mind for my minimum. I would like a ideal or premium cut an I or better color and vs1 or SI for clarity she likes round diamonds and also princess cut. I have certainly found a few nice rings on Blue Nile. I like that the coupon code ent10 gives 10 percent and using Google check out knocks off another $20 so I can actually expand my budget a little on that site.

BN does not provide images of their diamonds, but they are a good vendor especially if you havea tight budget. They do NOT allow upgrades, which I think is a very nice option if you thought that down the road you might like to get a larger diamond.

Check the numbers of your choices in BN using the Cut Advisor under tools, above. Scores under 2 are acceptable. If it is GIA EXcellent or AGS Ideal and scores under 2, then I think it is safe to buy. I would stick with VS2 clarity or greater with BN because you cannot see the diamond first to make sure it is ok.

Still, if it were me, I would buy from Goold Old Gold, Whiteflash, or Brian Gavin Diamonds and take advantage of the option of upgrading later, since you mentioned that you might like to save more in the future.

If you want to stay at I or higher in color you would be looking at around 1/2 carat.

I really want a nice quality diamond as her dad and grandpa use to be in a way associated with the jewelry business. I want to impress them and I believe hearts and arrows certainly will if I correctly understand the importance of that. I''m new to this whole process I’ve been researching the last few weeks. Is it a good idea to have I for color as my minimum? However the most important thing to me is making her happy after all that is what it’s all about.

I think that in the size you are considering if you get an ideal cut, then a J color will look plenty white. There isn''t much available up over the half carat mark right now in your budget, and not in an I color that I could find (I checked WF, GOG, and BGD). You can try JA, but they do not have the same upgrade policy as the others, which is why I prefer the ones I searched. They do have lots available in their "Ideal" category, but you will need to weed through them and put the numbers into the Cut advisor (under 2 is what you want) to find the winners.

H&A is an indication of optical symmetry and not really an indication of the cut quality in terms of light performance. So if you focus on the ideal proprtions then you can find a real performer and save some money by avoiding the H&A label. BUT if you think that it would be meaningful for your gf and her family to present to her an AGS0 H&A, then by all means go in that direction! I suspect that you would be blown away by the ACA that you are considering. I have owned 2 ACAs and they are gorgeous diamonds.
