Well, this one is unusal. I saw a very nice .80 pt modern cut Round brilliant that could be good for one of the side stones for a 3 stone ring. Nice stone, but it has a bruted girdle. I don''t like that look and I wonder if it can be recut on the girdle to make a faceted girdle.

Is this a possible thing? The stone is nice and I can get it quite reasonably which is why I am considering it. Any stone cutting experts out there? Would I lose a lot of carat weight with such an undertaking? Any info very much appreciated!

I can''t answer your question but I read somewhere on PS something about how on some stones brunted girdles can improve light return or *something* I think it was garry or david... but now it''s gone, did you do a search on brunted girdles? Any stone can be recut, it''s just a matter of if it will be what you want in the end lol

For some reason I'm thinking that girdles might be left unpolished on lower colored stones so that more whiteness reflects within(?). I have a set of studs (J and K color) and the girdle on one--presumably the K--is unpolished for that reason.

What is the color on the stone that you've come across?

Some cutters believe polishing the girdle may cause color to be reflected back inside, so unfaceted girdles are common in J or K color grades and down, and in small goods, .25 and lower. In near-colorless diamonds it''s not the concern that it is with slightly colored and below.

As with a recut someone will have to examine the actual diamond - in this case girdle specifics - to tell you anything decisive. Is this diamond in a rare class/category (or maybe just a great price)? I ask this because it might be less of a process to find another 80 pointer with a finished girdle, if that''s important to yo, rather than to buy one and have it polished.

You''re better off finding a stone with a faceted girdle for expense purposes, although Bill Bray (He Scores) will be able to tell you how much it would cost and if you would lose weight.

I agree with you that the bruted girdle is unattractive, but some swear by the slightly improved light characteristics...my counter argument is that with wear the girdle will quickly become filled with dirt and grease, thus making it grey which can''t be good for any light performance advantage one might have started with.

Thanks for this info everyone.

It''s an odd stone. It is set in a three quarters bezel - another useful item in a low color stone. There is no cert and yet it doesn''t look like a low color stone. I checked it and a gemologist I was with checked it. She didn''t think it was low color either. But it is hard to read that stone as so much of it is buried under platinum.

There is nothing rare about it so maybe I am better off to pass on this one. Hate to buy it, get it out of the bezel and find a bad color. It''s a cute little devil though
