I stumbled across this nice set. Ring was my size, earrings old style screw on but I can convert them to pierced.
14kt gold, well made.
Hmmmm.
So will it be glass, synthetic topaz, real blue topaz or aquamarine?
We’ll see.
It was eBay of course. Seller didn’t know what they were. And an ordinary seller so no fancy photos or carat weight estimates. I specifically look for these types of listings. I make a judgement call on the carat of the gold (these are 14kt) and quality of the setting. Generally better quality gems are more expensive and therefore more likely found in a well made setting.
Ring gem is about 22mm x 17mm and deep at 15mm. So as an aqua that around 40 carats or just over 50 carats as a blue topaz.
It’s going to have a huge window but in the photos I couldn’t see evidence of double refraction so it might be aqua. Could also be glass! Seller did say genuine gemstones so I’ll be able to return them if fake as a “not as described” - another buyers tip for taking a punt on such items.
If topaz I probably paid a tad too much, if aqua I got a bargain!
Fingers crossed.
