I am packing my dress in a carry-on ... it will be steamed at the hotel.

So... does anyone know if metal hangers can be brought on the airplane?

It's the kind that has a metal hook, but a plastic body.

?? no idea!

I don't see why not? I suppose you could get a plastic one to be safe?

I was thinking plastic but the dress is heavy, and big. Doesn't even matter though because I just tried stuffing it into the suitcase and NO WAY was it going to fit.. lol .. fits nicely in my new one though, with lots of extra room to spare. I am feeling nervous about having it in cargo though :errrr:

I've carried garment bags on and they have metal hanger-thingies, and I've never had an issue.. could you perhaps call the airport and inquire?

FI says he has done that too and looked at me like I was crazy. I just figured I'd be on the safe side.. But now the dress has to go in a suitcase and be checked! Ugg.

Oh.. I'd be a nervous wreck through that flight

There' absolutely no way to stuff it into a duffel you can carry on or something, and then plan to get it professionally ironed/whatever at your destination?

I carried mine. It was my carry on, and I had about 4 other items in there--all on separate hangers--metal dry cleaner ones for everything but the dress, and I had no issues. It was just in a big white dress bag--which got a lot of "Congratulations!" all through the airports. Couldn't you just do that? On the plane I put it in an overhead bin and everything was fine when I got there.

I agree with Yssie.. Why don't you just use a garment bag?? I looked up your dress and it's beautiful! It looks like it would easily fit in a garment bag..

This is what I plan on doing. If you're flying in a large enough plane, I know many a DW bride had the flight attendants offer to hang their dress in the First Class coat closet. Just take your garment bag, sew a washer onto where the zipper ends, and get a TSA-approved lock to lock the zipper to the washer. Then carry on with you!

The hanger is no problem. I carried on all the way to Italy! Everyone was really nice at security, check-in and on the plane. The flight attendants will hang it up for you in the coat closet (usu in business class). There are no worries at all.

I actually had no choice but to check mine because of its size and the small plane we took. When I checked it in I made sure they knew it was a wedding dress and they actually personally escorted it onto the plane and made sure it made the flight. It travelled really well and it didn't affect it at all being in checked luggage. I also put a hot pink band around the luggage so when it came onto the belt I grabbed it IMMEDIATELY!

I will also mention my dress is the Jim Hjelm 8012 just to give you an idea of how fluffy it is and the material it is made of.

I do have a garmet bag for it, but the dress is still really big with the train and the amount of fabric for my size.. even with spanx lol
I'm not sure what I was thinking looking at my dress and the carry on size now.

I had a bit of a freak out moment but figured in the extremely unlikely (or likely?) event that my dress does not make it.. what will I do? FREAK OUT.. yes.. but then go buy something else. Fi said he would wear jeans if he had to so we "match" I think I will see if I can tell them it's my wedding dress and please be careful with it. I feel like this :errrr: but need to put on this face :D

Though, one time coming back from Cabo someone on the plane stashed a bottle of some kind of red alcohol and it completely exploded in their luggage and soaked through their bags and then some. Thank gosh not mine!

Nine times out of ten you can take it as a carry on. Bring it in the garment bag, tell the agents it's your wedding dress dress. This time of year it should be pretty easy to have a flight attendant put it in the little coat closet at the front. They will usually say yes. If they don't, just lay it on top of all of the suitcases in the little cabinets. It will be fine. I wouldn't check it.
