Hi all,

I'm helping my bestfriend's boyfriend with a bit of research on a diamond for an engagement ring :Up_to_something:

She loves fluorescence in a diamond so we've been looking at Brian Gavin Blue and have found two diamonds that fit the criteria and budget but are unsure as to which would be the better buy

Diamond #1: 1.02 carat, AGS ideal, F, VS2

Diamond #2: 1.28 carat AGS ideal, F, S12

He feels the first might be a tad too small but other than that its perfect. He likes the size of the second diamond but is concerned about the clarity. So I thought I'd ask more experienced eyes for an opinion. Which would you choose?

Thanks!

Lisette :)

Nice picks. 8-) I suggest giving Brian a call. He has the stones in hand and can scrutinize the stones better than any of us can from images. He is very approachable and thorough with his work.

As long as the stone is eye and mind clean enough I would go with the bigger (and cheaper!) option.

Absolutely this!!

What I would do is set up an appointment with Brian where he has the the 3 diamonds in hand and have him talk you through them.
When the call is done you should have peace of mind which one to get.

I echo what the others have suggested - bought a BGD Blue a few weeks ago and Brian spent time with me on the phone discussing the stone, fluorescence in general, etc. Seems like an interesting guy to go out and have a drink with :)

Personally, I think the difference in size is probably the biggest thing for me in these choices. The SI1 and SI2 stones look pretty clean in the table, and probably aren't particularly noticeable perhaps unless under direct super close scrutiny of the loose stones, and might not even be visible when set. Again though, Brian will give you the straight dope.

I went with a 1.26ct stone, and can say that loose and set, the thing appears to be a noticeable step up over the "typical" 1 carat stones. Granted, I was lucky and found a G/VS2, but think I would have been happy with a small drop down in either metric as I probably paid a bit extra for traits that I can't fully appreciate and probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference in (especially set).

They will also send you the stone for review pre-setting if you choose - you'll just have to pay a bit extra for the shipping. Was worth it to me to check out the stone in different light conditions as I'd never personally seen a strong blue fluorescence stone before. Since your friend has already confirmed to like them, this may not be important.

Good luck!
