breakfast nook

Paul and I are trying to get lighting fixtures together for installation on the day of closing for our home. There is currently a really, really not pretty chandelier type of thing in the breakfast nook. It looks like it''s from the set of "The Addam''s Family."

For starts, here is a picture of the breakfast nook. From the front door of the house, it''s a straight shot to the back of the house, where there is the bay windowed breakfast nook area. For this reason, we want the light to be good for the area, and for the looks from the entrance of the home.

These are the lighting options we are considering at this time. I''m still tossing around if a pendant is the way we need to go, as the room isn''t huge, but the chandeliers we''re looking at aren''t huge, and seem to be more attractive or at least more interesting as far as looks go.

What would you choose? Or would you pick something totally different?

That''s my favorite, too, Monarch. I just wonder if it''s too big for the room, though. It''s not as big as a dining room. Do you think five lights is too much for the area?

I think five lights could be appropriate if you didn''t put in 100 watt bulbs. The wattage is what''s going to feel overwhelming, not the fixture IMO. If you''re leaving the room the color it is now, I vote for the five bulb chandalier, too. If you''re going to a different color, I''d probably choose the pendant only because if you have a bright/deep/unnatural color, I wouldn''t want to add to more stuff going on.

I like the third option best. There will be no lights in your eyes either with the globes facing up.

I think for the time being, the only rooms we are looking at possibly changing the colors in would be the kitchen, the "man cave" (basement room for Paul) and one day, the room we''ll hopefully be using for a nursery.

It was really overcast the day the pictures were taken of the home and all electricity was off; it''s not nearly as dark as it appears.

Nah. Our dining room (also where our backdoor or usual entrance is located) is about 12x12 and we have a really pretty/modern black with nickel hardware ceiling fan as a light fixture, it has 4 lamps and really suits the room. The span of the fan blades is probably 3 feet, and granted they are maybe 8" from the ceiling, but the lamps hang down about 16" from the ceiling. The DR table balances the fixture, it sits right underneath.

Will you have a table directly underneath your fixture? If so, I think you can go bigger than you might think you can, the table will be a visual balance.

Ha ha, I totally call the basement "the man cave" because that''s where my DH has his big screen and huge a$$ sectional couch, and he spends the majority of his free time down there. One of my girlfriends calls it the "hangover room" because so little light comes in during the day, it''s nice and dark and subterranean. There are tons of recessed bulbs in the ceiling, but he unscrews half of them so it isn''t too bright at any given time, which drives me nuts because I can''t see to do laundry and I am forever screwing them back in so I can see. Of course, he unscrews them as soon as I am finished.

We plan to get a small, round pub style table with chairs that have backs. So far, we've only found stool style seating and Paul says he "has" to have a back. So, the search continues.


About the "man cave," it's the funniest thing because it's this pale pink room right now, with lace curtains. Whoo hoo for manly things, no?

May is his birthday month, and I was trying to find a desk for him, but he's being far too picky about the style, material, and area of production of the thing, so I've laid that aside. Now, I'm planning to go out with him tomorrow to pick the wall color he'd like and get him some "manly" curtains to go with it. He says he thinks he wants Roman shades because that sounds like something that belongs in a man cave. I just smiled, because they're not expensive and I don't think he has a clue how easy he's letting me off with that! I think I'm just going to give him cash to go towards the desk because the man has bigger tastes than I can handle for a basement when we have to furnish the whole house, too.

I think if we did the pendant route, we'd end up regretting it and wish we'd spent the extra little bit of money to get something with more style in the room.

We're also doing a search for ceiling fans, but I just can't find any that are pretty and not hundreds and hundreds of dollars. We've tried Lowes and they seem to be less expensive than Home Depot, but I'm still hoping to find a discount outlet somewhere around here... the search continues.

LOL re te pale pink man cave. I ended up having my mom sew some temporary man cave curtains for the two very small windows where he actually resided (it''s a big basement but splt by a paneled wood wall). Her interpretation was to do two panels of small leopard print, ha ha ha. He kept them up for a while until he finally went out and got blinds to fit. As for the rest of the furniture, let Paul do what he wants, imo, let him have his desk and just do your own thing upstairs! In my experience, men are suprisingly flexible once they get their way with "their room" as far as the rest of the home.

Don''t forget to check out Pier One for pub tables and chairs, most of their pub height chairs have backs, and they''re not as expensive as maybe PB or C&B. Also, don''t get a fixture that hangs too low, you don''t want to be banging your head on it if you move the table to mop or vacuum! I do love ceiling fans since you get the combo light/fan deal. They are somewhat of an energy saver, I think, because you can set them to summer or winter depending on the temp outside and take advantage of using cool or warm air within your house.

I think all of our ceiling fans came from Home Depot, they are all the Hunter brand. They were all installed by the previous owners and they were a big selling point for us, since our house was built in ''48 and the original fixtures were removed and the ceiling fans were installed. We love them, the only negative is dusting the fan blades every so often, they tend to get caked with dust and other yucky stuff, especially the kitchen one. Other than that we really like them, and I think they''re well worth the price.

I like he first one better. Once you get the furniture in, it might overwhelm the space to put the other two lighting fixtures in it.
